A salute to The Omega Factor, a seminal 1970s sci-fi TV series that paved the way for many more to follow...
One of the funny quirks about Scotland is that everyone can name a Scots actor, but very few can name famous Scottish TV shows. Beyond the standard native fare of cop shows and comedies, Scotland’s televisual output is well below its literary or film standing.
Of course, there’s Take The High Road (And if you get that reference, dear reader, you can mournfully reflect that you’re as old as me). But there are a few surprising gems beyond the cliched obsession with the Jacobites and Highland allure (ahem, Outlander).
In 1979, and all too briefly, The Omega Factor was BBC Scotland’s paranormal, Edinburgh-set drama. The series, as was so typical of (nearly) every show now considered iconic for the era, only ran for...

Exclusive: Director revisiting his 70s cult horror.
Harry Kümel’s cult classic Daughters Of Darkness (1971) was one of the cult lesbian vampire films of the 1970s.
Now, more than 40 years later, Kümel is revamping and plotting a sequel.
Details of the new feature, Mothers Of Darkness, were revealed by producer Tomas Leyers of Brussels-based Minds Meet, the art-house company best known for such titles as Little Baby Jesus Flandr and Lost Persons Area.
“He (Kümel) came to me with several projects. I read all of them and one of them was the first draft of the script for Mothers Of Darkness… it sparked the fire immediately to work on this project,” Leyers said.
A new version of the script is now finished and the filmmakers are talking to international cast for the English-language project, which is slated to shoot in the summer of 2018.

While the Power Rangers may be the best known heroes of the tokusatsu genre around the world the style of film - one that pits masked heroes against cosmic foes witha fusion of special effects and grounded martial arts action - has a long and rich history. Yes, the biggest brands all originate in Japan, where the genre first emerged, but it crops up throughout Asia with a fairly high degree of regularity and it would appear a significant new entry has just arrived in Indonesia. Releasing right about now, Satria Heroes: Revenge Of Darkness stars The Raid baddie Yayan Ruhian in a key part while offering up what appears to be a very high production value spin on all the classic tokusatsu elements with...

From the currently playing Their Finest to the likes of Bowfinger and Boogie Nights, we salute the movies about making movies...
If you haven't caught up yet, Their Finest is currently playing in UK cinemas and it's a gorgeous little love letter to perseverance through storytelling, set against the backdrop of a film production office at the British Ministry of Information during the Second World War. Based on Lissa Evans' novel, Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy play characters whose access to the film industry has been contingent on the global crisis that takes other young men away from such trifling matters, and it's a real joy to watch.
Among other things, the film got us thinking about other films about making films. We're not talking about documentaries, even though Hearts Of Darkness, the documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now, may be the greatest film about...

There are countless programs that support emerging filmmakers in their development and now up-and-coming horror directors have one of their own. Shudder, a streaming service backed by AMC Networks that specializes in horror content, has just announced the first 11 participants of their inaugural Shudder Labs. Selected from a pool of over 300 applicants, directors are taking part in a week long workshop designed to develop, add and hone their skills as they get ready to take the next step in their careers working in the genre.
“Like a vampire, I feed off of the enthusiasm of young talent; it is invigorating to encounter new voices in the horror genre and to find out what motivates young minds to explore the art of the macabre,” said director and Master-in-Residence Larry Fessenden.
Throughout the course of the program, the fellows will be able to learn from and work with a team of Masters-in-Residence, headed by Shudder curator Sam Zimmerman, Fessenden, writer Clay McLeod Chapman and AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan. The program’s benefits, however, aren’t contained to the program alone. After the filmmakers have left the lab, they will each receive $5000 in grants and be mentored by a Master-in-Residence for an additional year.
Shudder Labs is currently running from June 13th to June 18th at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York.
The filmmakers, and their projects, of the first ever Shudder Labs are:
“As the Dust Settles,” Mike Olenick
An asteroid carrying the seeds of alien life crashes down in the neighborhood where a young couple is buying a house from a dishonest realtor. When the couple settles into their new home, they unpack a secret that will change the lives of everyone in the neighborhood: the truth about what happened to the home’s previous owner.”Mike Olenick focuses on forbidden desire, reproduction, transformation, and outer space in his projects. Mike’s films have streamed on Mubi, aired on Dutch television, and won awards at the Slamdance Film Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival. He studied photography at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and has edited films and videos with Guy Maddin, the Quay Brothers, Kelly Reichardt, Sadie Benning, and Jennifer Reeder.”“Beyond the Darkness,” Shane Wheeler
A modern sorcerer must save his friends from a dark dimension, but to succeed he must overcome his own suicidal depression.
“Trained as a biologist, Shane Wheeler wrote his first screenplay while working on a fishing boat in the Bering Sea. Since then, he’s written, directed, and produced a number of award-winning shorts, as well as features Captive of a Death Mask (2012) & Stabbing with Frank (2016). Wheeler is a filmmaker raised in Brownstown, Michigan.”
“Black Bats,” Rick Spears
Feeling cast out from society, two teens begin a relationship under the belief that they’re transforming into monsters. What begins as a fantasy ends with horrific consequences as they both lose touch with reality.
“Rick Spears is mostly known for his comic book writing, having published eleven graphic novels and numerous comics including Teenager from Mars and Dead West. Rick has also written and directed a handful of award-winning short films. Black Bats will be his first feature.”
“In the Night,” Joshua Erkman
A 24-year-old running from his past starts a new job picking up the dead for a mortuary and begins to suspect powerful sinister forces are closing in on him.
“Joshua Erkman is a Los Angeles based filmmaker, a USC graduate, and drummer for La punk band Lamps.”
“Lovespell,” Courtney and Hillary Andujar
A teenage girl in Hawaii casts a dark spell that unlocks something sinister within herself.
“Courtney and Hillary Andujar are identical twins who grew up at punk shows and in diners in Texas. Courtney is a writer and designer who has collaborated with artists and activists such as Yoko Ono, Paul Chan, and Julian Assange. Hillary is an art director who has worked internationally with Tim Burton, David Lynch, and The Wachowskis.”
“Polybius,” Hunter Stephenson
It’s the summer of 1984 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The only thing booming louder than the arcades is the aircraft over Fort Bragg. A hip babysitter named Tiffany is determined to show the brothers Carmack the parent-free weekend of their lives. But her reality is bleeped when the younger brother, a vidiot ‘sperger named Palmer, is snatched after encountering a pylon-like arcade cabinet. Joined by a skeleton crüe, it’s up to Tiffany to kick ass, chew bubblegum and fore’s destroy this trippy gamer-gateway to hell.
“Hunter Stephenson is a Scottish punk. He is also a writer/producer based east of the Rockies. His recent Noisey doc-series Hot Sugar’s Cold World received the Honorable Mention at Hot Docs 2015, and was executive produced by David Gordon Green, Jody Hill, and Danny McBride.”
“The Eyes,” Will Forbes
In 1970’s Upstate New York, there is a local legend of The Eyes, a spirit in the woods of the Catskill Mountains that consumes the souls of the lost and weary. When the favorite uncle of three local kids dies suddenly and under mysterious circumstances at the edge of those woods, the kids set out on a mission to discover the horrifying truth.
“Will Forbes has been composing and producing music for visual media for nearly a decade, until he realized the best way to achieve his goal of scoring horror films was to start making them himself. Originally from Upstate New York, he currently lives in Inglewood, CA with a cat and a tortoise.”
“The Sound of Darkness,” Melody Cooper
A blind musician and a deaf sculptor are haunted by a woman only they can see and hear, who leads them to take on an epic battle against terrifying legacy of racial violence and evil.
“Melody Cooper is a screenwriter, director and producer of Horror and Afrofuturism, and Winner of the 2016 Women in Cinema International Screenplay Competition with her horror feature Monstrous, which also won Third Place at Slamdance. She is directing the supernatural thriller The Sound Of Darkness this summer.”
“Un-Seen,” Lucy Cruell
Some things once seen, cannot be unseen.
“Lucy Cruell is a graduate with honors from Duke University and Harvard Law School. Lucy has also been a published short story author, film critic for multiple publications, and entrepreneur. Her screenplays and pilots have won over three dozen awards and festivals including Shriekfest. She is now a full time writer, director, and starving artist.”
“What Happens Next Will Scare You,” Chris Lamartina
On the verge of losing their jobs, a group of click-bait journalists struggle to compile their scariest viral videos for a Halloween listicle, but when a cursed entry brings malevolent forces into their reality, our social media junkies must figure out they’re sharing harmful content before they become victims of their own monsters. “Chris Lamartina is a Baltimore filmmaker and has been delivering high concepts on low budgets, blending horror and comedy with such films as “Call Girl of Cthulhu” and “Wnuf Halloween Special” since 2007. With a curious knack for finding humor in the weird, Lamartina’s films have been critically acclaimed-playing film festivals across the globe, and garnering coverage by NPR, the New York Times, and MTV.” Related stories'31' Trailer: Rob Zombie Returns With Carnies Who Have Twelve Hours To Survive10 Horror Filmmakers Overdue to Make New FeaturesThe 20 Best Horror Films of the Last 20 Years...

In total, The Ministry Of Darkness was only featured on then-wwf programming for around 8 months in 1999. Looking beyond the actual proper formation of the members who would make up the group, however, the seeds for the faction were sown months beforehand at the tail end of 1998. One shocking act from The Undertaker heralded the arrival of the Ministry, before the stable was officially announced on television by the ‘Lord Of Darkness’ himself.
Much like many other storylines during the much-loved ‘Attitude’ Era, the tale of The Ministry Of Darkness was a quick-moving blur of events and matches. It really seemed that Vince McMahon and his team of writers (including one Vince Russo) were flying by the seat of their pants with the angle, looking to up the stakes each week by presenting something new and interesting.
This article takes wrestling fans through the storyline from beginning to end,...

“A Study Of Darkness”
By Raymond Benson
One of the more controversial motion pictures to emerge out of what film historians call “New Hollywood” was In Cold Blood, which was released to theaters “for mature audiences only.” The New Hollywood movement began around 1966, when the Production Code finally started to collapse (and before the movie ratings were instituted) and studios commenced allowing auteur filmmakers to do whatever the hell they wanted. The year 1967 was especially a groundbreaking one with the release of such “adult” fare as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, In the Heat of the Night, and In Cold Blood.
In Cold Blood is based on the “non-fiction novel” by Truman Capote about the true crime of 1959 in which an innocent family of four in Kansas were murdered by two ex-cons who believed there was $10,000 hidden in a safe in the house (there wasn’t). Capote spent several years writing the book,...

Nick Cheung has made the most of his recent ascendency to the Hong Kong A list by stepping into the director's chair, first with Hungry Ghost Ritual and now Keeper of Darkness. Again Cheung also takes the lead, this time out playing an exorcism specialist who employs negotiation techniques to take down his spectral foes.Keeper Of Darkness will have its World Premiere on 22 November as the closing film of the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, before then hitting theatres the following week. Personally I was not a fan of Hungry Ghost Ritual, but it is nevertheless encouraging to see Cheung flying the flag for Hong Kong horror.Nick Cheung stars as street-smart exorcist Wong who has a unique method of dealing with vengeful spirits: He...

The Simpsons has pastiched hundreds of movies in its time. From Hitchcock to Kubrick to Disney, we select our top 30 favourites...
The Simpsons has a long history of peppering its stories with pop culture references, and some of the show’s finest gags stem from the world of cinema. These have ranged from the briefest of quotes, to full on shot-for-shot parodies and extended episode-long homages.
Most striking in trying to put this list together was the sheer volume of movie references there are to choose from. In pretty much any given episode of The Simpsons, there are at least a couple, with nods to James Bond, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the work of Alfred Hitchcock proving three of the most regular candidates. The tributes to numerous great horror movies in the show’s Treehouse Of Horror episodes could have been used to fill this list all on their own.

We spoke to seminal Us fantasy and sci-fi author Ursula Le Guin about her career, radicalism, literary influence and more…
A Wizard Of Earthsea. The Left Hand Of Darkness. The Lathe Of Heaven. The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. The Dispossessed. Ursula Le Guin may not thank me for listing them (“Everybody wants to go back to the older stuff, come on now! I’ve written some really good stuff recently! I don’t want to get stuck in reminiscing”) but the novels and short stories she published in the sixties and seventies are undeniable sci-fi and fantasy classics.
Le Guin has nourished imaginative literature for decades with fine, precise prose and political provocation. She’s also spent years clear-headedly defending sci-fi and fantasy against the kind of people who turn up their noses up at books with dragons on their covers and maps in their title pages.

Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace was the highest-grossing film. “Believe” by Cher was the highest-selling and most-played song. Family Guy and SpongeBob SquarePants made their debuts on television. If you were looking for a new video game system, the Sega Dreamcast made its debut on the market. 1999 was a crazy year for pop culture.
The wrestling world was buzzing in 1999, as well. WCW was riding a tremendous wave of back-to-back-to-back successful years, although there were chinks starting to show in their armor. Ecw was coming on strong as the number three promotion, working their way up to getting on national television, albeit in a deal that would eventually help lead to their demise. Using one of the most talented overall rosters in wrestling history, the WWF was finally beginning to turn the corner in the Monday Night War after getting handled in the ratings battle for several months.

Occasionally a making-of documentary comes along that transcends the format's more usual DVD-special-feature status. Eleanor Coppola's Hearts Of Darkness springs to mind, as does Les Blank's Burden Of Dreams. And now here's a new one to potentially join that select pantheon. Check out the trailer for Liv Corfixen's My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn, in which she documents her husband's fraught emotional journey bringing Only God Forgives to the screen.Much like Eleanor Coppola, it's clear that Corfixen's relationship to her subject gave her access to moments where any normal documentary crew would have told to push off for a while. Refn is generally a self-deprecating character in interviews anyway, but it's fascinating to see him quite this vulnerable. "I've been making this film for three years," he opines at one point, "and I have no idea what it's about."My LIfe Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn...

The halls are starting to hum softly here in Berlin as the European Film Market swings into gear. The first deals were announced yesterday before the event officially opened, with The Weinstein Co notably boarding Im Global’s The Man Who Made It Snow. This morning, FilmNation unveiled a series of offshore output deals for titles from Open Road, which will kick off with the Jamie Foxx/Michelle Monaghan-starrer Sleepless Nights.
Though it’s not likely to be a frenzy, and with currency concerns in the market internationally, Berlin should see more action in the coming days. Distributors are looking for product for 2016 and beyond, and some memorable buys have emerged here in recent years. In 2014, The Weinstein Company made a record-setting $7M deal for The Imitation Game which has now made about $140M worldwide and has an armful of Oscar nominations to boot.

According to a recent report from TV Line, the Once Upon A Time season 4 folks have added actor, Sebastian Roche (left), to their payroll to come on and play Aurora's daddy, King Stefan, in the upcoming second half. He has a history that’s entangled with the sorceress, Maleficent, who years ago, cursed Aurora. Maleficent is also one of the Queens Of Darkness that will be showing up in Storybrooke to wreak havoc. You might have also seen Sebastian Roche portray the always angry as hell vampire stepfather father of Klaus on CW's "The Originals" and "The Vampire Diaries" hit shows. Along with those major credits, Sebastian's acting resume includes roles on ABC's other hit show Scandal, General Hospital, Fringe and CW's Supernatural. There's currently no intel on when Sebastian's King Stefan will exactly show up, but keep an eye out for him. Season 4 is set to start back up on Sunday night,...

As previously reported, TV Guide delivered their latest Mega Buzz, spoiler chat session and dished out new spoiler intel for the upcoming "Once Upon A Time" season 4,second half. It turns out that we're going to learn that these Queens Of Darkness that have recently arrived on the scene, also had a past run-in with both Snow White and Prince Charming. When asked how the Queens Of Darkness will invade Storybrooke, they explained: "That's something that will be addressed pretty quickly," executive producer Adam Horowitz tells TVGuide.com. "It's going to require some guile on all of their parts." And just as Regina had a history with Maleficent, we'll discover that other Storybrooke residents have had run-ins with the Queens in the past. "Snow and Charming had a very interesting period of time with the Queens of Darkness," executive producer Edward Kitsis adds. "As we always learn on the show,...

Various Star Wars movies, games and TV shows have been canned over the years. The Force was not strong with these...
The Star Wars universe is a dangerous place. For example, ‘man walks into a bar’ gags in Mos Eisley tend to end with unwarranted threats, droid racism, limbs being chopped off, impromptu deaths or – worst of all – rigorous re-editing.
Until the recent Disney buy-out, the world created by George Lucas was just as treacherous for seemingly-exciting projects. Lucasfilm/LucasArts, for a time, became notorious for the number of cancellations under its belt, with films, TV shows and game ideas constantly being chucked out at various stages of their development.
But when did the term ‘countless’ ever stop us trying to count things? Never, that’s when. So we donned a pointy-hooded robe and scoured the desert wilderness of the internet to bring you what we hope is a complete...

Rob counts down the top 50 episodes of TV's longest-running animated series, The Simpsons...
Since its debut in 1989, across 552 episodes and 25 seasons, The Simpsons has become one of the most revered and beloved TV programmes of all time. It’s a true cultural phenomenon that’s influenced not just animation, but all areas of TV comedy and sitcom. For so many of us, its quotes and catchphrases have permeated our everyday vernacular, from single words like “crisitunity” and “embiggen” to phrases “you don’t win friends with salad” and “everything’s coming up Milhouse.”
Personal opinions may vary, but for me the show’s peak years were from season 4 through to 10. They’re consistently funny, all killer and no filler runs with barely a dud episode to be found between 1992-1998. Past this point the standard becomes a little more mixed, and recent seasons have been distinctly average at best. The...

In an industry that values youth, you'd think that being a young filmmaker would be an asset, but when "young" means under 18, that's not necessarily a good thing. In fact, sometimes age can get in the way of filmmaking. Below, 16-year-old Long Island, New York-based filmmaker Devon Narine-Singh, who recently completed work on his short film "Of Darkness and Light," highlights the 3 downsides to being a teenage filmmaker: 1. SAG-aftra is Not Designed for Filmmakers Under 18 If you want to work with someone who is a member of SAG-aftra on your project (the teen filmmaker's project would be considered a “non-union” project), you have to fill out paperwork and get permission from SAG-aftra to use one of its members. Yolonda Ross ("Go For Sisters,") a member of SAG-aftra, signed onto the film shortly before Christmas break. I had wanted to make a feature film, however due to SAG-aftra's rule about having payroll for feature films,...

There are currently four Indiana Jones movies, and some might say that's one too many. But what about the Indy movies that never were?
For a new Indiana Jones movie to go forward, it requires a degree of agreement amongst three people who don't seem to have a habit of agreeing very much. Basically, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford and George Lucas all have to say yes, else the project stalls, and a different approach is taken.
As a consequence of this, there's a trail of unmade Indiana Jones films that failed to get the necessary unanimous agreement. The ingredients of some of them would find their way into others, and some ideas would never be returned to. Here then is a whistle-stop tour of the Indiana Jones movies that never were...

Actress Yolonda Ross recently joined the cast of 16 year old writer/director Devon Narine-Singh's upcoming short film Of Darkness And Light. Narine-Singh's film follows a young man (played by Scotty Curcie) who's mourning the loss of his best friend who committed suicide. According to the filmmaker: Yolonda Ross' character is extremely pivotal to the story. In the opening of the film, the young man goes to Ms. Littlefield and they begin talking. As the conversation [happens], flashbacks occur, detailing the young man's relationship with his friend, and the downward spiral that occurred after his friend's death. Production on the film is taking place...

Like Hollywood, the video game world has its stars who have sometimes had falls from grace. Sometimes, just like in Hollywood, they recover and have fantastic career comebacks – after all, the mid to late nineties weren’t great for Sylvester Stallone, but he made a huge comeback with Rocky Balboa. And now he’s gone back to making the same films as he was making before his career nearly ended.
You could say the same thing happened for Lara Croft. After her Ps One glory she had Tomb Raider The Angel Of Darkness on PS2, which almost killed the franchise. Luckily it came back and has had two reinventions including the fantastic reboot last year.
Of course for every Rocky style comeback, there’s a Christian Slater or a Mel Gibson who either lose their star quality or get a bad public image from which they just can’t come back.

Really, editors of WhatCulture.com Really?
“10 Ways To Make Star Trek V Not Suck”? you have assigned me with today. Ten! You understand this means watching Star Trek V again, right? For reasons other than making fun of it?
I’ve enjoyed my time writing for WhatCulture! But I’m concerned that, by publishing this article and encouraging anyone to voluntarily watch Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, we are in violation of some international human rights treaty. (I know the Geneva Convention specifically prohibits soldiers from showing odd-numbered Star Trek movies to prisoners of war. Hearings are currently taking place to see if Star Trek: Nemesis falls under the same statutes.)
In the interest of safety and diplomatic relations, I’ve volunteered for this assignment so no one else has to jump on this cinematic grenade. Coming up with ten – ten! – justifications for polishing this turd will be a feat of stamina,...

Iconic adult star Tera Patrick is going mainstream in her second horror film, "Angel Of Darkness - The Legend Of Lilith". More and more adult stars are making the transition to mainstream films and mostly horror explains Robert "Corpsy" Rhine, who is also the Publisher of Girls and Corpses Magazine adding, Tera Patrick is a name that people know are interested in for producing horror films. TomCat Films is headed by sales and distribution veteran Ted Chalmers. He has been involved with the sales and distribution of such well-known films as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation", "Hellraiser", "Escape From New York", "Re-animator", "Bride Of Re-animator", "Society" and "Evil Dead 2". Chalmers cast Patrick, Rhine and Hoffman and is going the...

Change is unavoidable; it just is the way of things. Yet, this hasn’t stopped us from hating the result of this process. Woodrow Wilson once said, “if you want to make enemies, try to change something.” This has been proven to be truth over and over again. As a wrestling and comic fan, I am overly familiar with the “They changed it, so now I hate it” trope… sadly, sometimes this is true. Video games are the only place where this trope actually is justified. How often have you played a great game only to be horrified by a bad series of sequels? For me, way too often!
The story, the characters, location, feel controls and everything that you loved was overhauled and scraped. This has happened again and again. To the horror of fans everywhere, just check out the reaction the last Resident Evil, GTA IV or even the latest Saints Row game.

Have you ever wondered what are the films that inspire the next generation of visionary filmmakers? As part of our monthly Ioncinephile profile (read this months’ pick), we ask the filmmaker the incredibly arduous task of identifying their top ten (eleven in this case) favorite films of all time. Hannah Fidell (who saw her first feature film A Teacher hit Sundance and SXSW, concludes a busy year with a VOD and theatrical release (September 6th) via Oscilloscope Laboratories. Here are her “favorite films right now (at this very moment)”. Enjoy!

Michael celebrates the story behind the outstanding Apocalypse Now...
When reading the extensive, semi-mythological stories that detail the production of Francis Ford Coppola's surreal Vietnam epic, Apocalypse Now, it's baffling that it was made at all.
By the mid-1970s, Coppola was one of the stars of New Hollywood, holding unprecedented power and critical respect, dominating the 1974 Oscars with a total of fourteen nominations shared by his second Godfather rhapsody and the arty Antonioni riff, The Conversation, including a double nomination for Best Picture, and the rare honour of being nominated for both Best Original and Adapted Screenplays. This was alongside producing George Lucas' pre-Star Wars hit, American Graffiti, and contributing the screenplay to the lavish big-screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby, which helped place Coppola in the powerful position of being a successful director, producer and writer.
Coppola had developed a reputation of being both ambitious and reliable.
