While Red's Mother's cottage was a real location - shot in a historic, 150 year old cottage - Granny's cottage was built inside the living room of a dilapidated, 90-year-old home. The fireplace had a false front, two doorways were boarded up and a new door was hung - all of which was found in a garbage heap next to the house itself.
The film is 13 minutes long, features 13 actors, cost $13,000NZ to make and took just over 13 months to complete.
None of the fantasy sequences existed in the original screenplay - they were added during preproduction.
The forest sequences are actually shot in a cemetery located in the middle of Auckland's central business district. If the camera were to tilt up or pan too far away; skyscrapers, billboards and a massive overpass would be visible.
