An intriguing mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon16 February 2023
Rebus is conflicted, when a raid at a brothel leads to the arrest of the wealthy businessman and charitable philanthropist Gregor Jack, a man Rebus has a degree of respect for.

It's definitely an interesting mystery, the opening is very intriguing, it takes another twist with the second death. You'll be kept waiting to learn the truth.

It was great to see Rebus and Siobhan working closely together for a change, no squabbling, no work dumping, the pair were good together, and as always the chemistry between Stott and Price was very good.

Some fine guest performances, Joanne Froggatt seemed to be making her way at this stage, and landing bigger parts. Gary Lewis, I could watch him in anything, he's brilliant, and that voice is magical.

Very good, 8/10.

Good if you haven't read the book

Sadly I had literally just finished the book, and wanted to see how it was on screen. Little proviso, I had seen all the Ken Stott episodes before, about a year ago, and really liked them. The problem is that - apart from being quite loose adaptations of Rankin's book (and some episodes have actually nothing to do with the book, like Knots and Crosses), the story is too simplified. I think that even having to squeeze it in an hour episode, there could have been more plot intricacies, more twists. Love Ken Stott, he makes a very good Rebus, but that's about it.

Strip Jack

A police raid in a brothel leads to embarrassment for businessman and philanthropist Gregor Jack who is caught in the raid.

His wife walks out on him but she is then soon found dead.

Rebus is a fan of Gregor's philanthropy but he has to consider if he did kill his wife. Rebus has seen that Gregor has bit of a temper.

Rebus also thinks that the police raid in the brothel was a set up to catch Gregor. However he was there not to meet up with a prostitute but a missing person Gregor has been trying to track down for some time.

The cut down Ken Stott version of Rebus leads to a fast moving episode. The subplots from Rankin's book though gets glossed over.

In this simplified version, Gregor Jack comes over as arrogant and charmless.

Interesting plot, terrible background music

Warning: Spoilers
Had trouble following what seemed to an interesting plot because the background music and other sounds were set so high I couldn't track the dialogue. OK I'll add more. There was one murder that turned out to be a distraction, and may have provided an idea regarding disposal of the body. It was simply solved, I think, but can't be sure since, again, the background sounds were tracking so loud There was no way in God's green earth that I could follow the entire dialogue.

I also feel there was too much effort put into making the prime apparent suspect seem like a good guy even though he appears guilty.
