A great conversation between Joan Bennett and Grayson Hall finds the two formidable women questioning each other on various subjects. It's a great class in the subtlety of the two veteran actresses who haven't yet shared many moments onscreen but here play wonderfully off of each other. There's also great moments between Julia and Barnabas which indicates that the obvious conclusion of a failure in Julia's experiments and treatment would painfully destroy Barnabas and violently end Julia's life.
Then there's the announcement that Victoria and Burke have decided to get married, with Barnabas and Julia present. This sets up another scheme between Julia and Barnabas and his determination to destroy Burke regardless of whether he remains a vampire or not. It's obvious that the desire to become a real human being again without blood luster does greatly appeal to Barnabas, but even that wouldn't destroy his villainy. That makes for a great conclusion that setting up some great dramatic plotting potential.
