When Jason is caught, he wants to speak to Elizabeth alone, and the truth is something that is rather far fetched but also acceptable, especially since the buried trunk turns out to be empty. So we learn a shocking truth about Paul but what seems to be Jason's exit (but isn't) might upset those who want to see happen with Jason. Elizabeth is far too decent and forgiving, and while that adds to her status as one of the most beloved matriarchs in soap history, it doesn't give Collinsport's law enforcement much credibility.
This does lead to the next two episodes which are Jason's last, and at least the writers didn't stretch it out. His last shot of this episode does promise some genuine thrills in the 40 minutes of those two episodes which promise to be as dark and eerie as a 60's classic Hammer film.
