- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: I have to tell you something that I put off for much too long.
- Carolyn Stoddard: You're not gonna tell me about the birds and the bees, are you?
- Jason McGuire: I see a reflection of a night eighteen years ago. I see myself right in this very room. And I see Paul Stoddard lying there on the floor, bloodied and dead. And you, Liz, standing over him. Now isn't that a scene depicting evil, hmm? The murderess and her victim. Did you think you were an evil person that night, Liz?
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: I don't remember feeling much of anything. Just a sort of numbing shock.
- Jason McGuire: I knew that what I was doing wasn't right. But then I didn't think that it was wrong because I knew where the evil was--Paul Stoddard! You knew it and I knew it. Perhaps justice was just a little left-handed that night.
- Jason McGuire: [singing] Oh, where oh where has Paul Stoddard gone? Oh, where oh where can he be?
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: Stop it!
- Jason McGuire: Well, we can give them the answer to that one, you and me, huh? We could give them the answer, now couldn't we, Liz?
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: Yes, we could.
- Jason McGuire: But... the answer to that one would cause things to happen. Cataclysmic things! Like investigations, diggings, autopsies, postmortems, indictments, trials, scandal... and eventually prison.
- Jason McGuire: It is not humor, Liz. It's not funny and it's not absurd. I'm telling you, as serious as I can, there's going to be a wedding between us.
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: You can't be serious.
- Jason McGuire: Oh, can't I?
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: Why, it's impossible.
- Jason McGuire: Is it?
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: I'd die before I married you.
- Jason McGuire: Well, now, Liz, let's hope you don't have to go that far.
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: The thought of being married to you is inconceivable.
- Jason McGuire: Why is it?
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: Well, the most obvious reason I can think of is that I detest you.
- Jason McGuire: [chuckling] So... you detest the man who pulled you through the greatest crisis of your life? Oh, you'd like to forget the bad things, wouldn't you? You'd like to forget the man who helped you because it's embarrassing to you, isn't it?
- Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: Can't we close the book on what happened eighteen years ago?
- Jason McGuire: That book will always remain open... as long as Paul Stoddard is missing.
