Narrated by the character Mari (SistaGod herself), this film chronicles her transition from a girl who cheats death to a harbinger of death itself. Born to a white American soldier and a black Trinidadian woman, she is exposed to death at an early age, being conceived and growing up near a cemetery, and miraculously surviving after accidentally ingesting poison. At age eighteen, she dreams a premonition of the future, after which she realizes that she is the "Messiah". Her presence on Earth will herald an event known as the "Apocalypso" - the end of humanity.
Shot entirely in Trinidad, this is the first film in a fantasy trilogy by the talented director Yao Ramesar. The film is very surreal, with a haunting musical score, and Orisha songs performed by singer Ella Andall. There is a great emphasis on imagery, so despite the genre, don't expect any Hollywood-grade visual effects in the film.
The acting was brilliant, even though there was practically no dialog in this movie. Evelyn Caesar Munroe cemented the role of Mari perfectly, while Michael Cherrie was excellent, and in some parts, humorous, as the televangelist.
What impressed me the most about this film is its use of traditional Carnival characters that are still well-known in Trinidad today. They suit the dark mood of the film (especially the frightening climax where they are seen participating in a Carnival procession before the Apocalypso).
"SistaGod" was one of the most unique films I have ever seen. I am patiently anticipating its release on DVD, as well as the subsequent sequels in theater. If you're interested in Caribbean movies, or if you just want a break from the same old Hollywood yarn, check this film out. Thumbs up, Mr. Ramesar.
