Inspired by the real-life catastrophic Halifax explosion of 1917, Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby’s Oscar nominated animation short The Flying Sailor tells the story of a seaman whose life flashes before his eyes when he finds himself catapulted into the air in the wake of the blast. It’s a poignant film that takes a darkly comical stance on the existential circumstance the sailor finds himself in. Through a blend of 2D, 3D and live action techniques, Forbis and Tilby impressively bring their tale to life with plenty of whimsy but also a rich melancholic contemplation. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that The Flying Sailor just won The Short Film Jury Award: Animation at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and marks the pair’s third Oscar nomination to date. Dn spoke with the co-directors, in the run up to the prestigious awards ceremony, about their career-long partnership, the...

In Disney’s animated film “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” tech CEO Marc Weidell (Justice Smith) unveils his newest invention, the B*Bot, a revolutionary robot designed to become a child’s best friend by learning their interests through social media. What could possibly go wrong?
London-based Locksmith Animation teamed with Double Negative (Dneg) to build the machines at the center of the movie. With a pill-shaped body, two simple arms, hands and two wheels that served as legs, the B*Bots started to come together.
“The B*Bots were inspired by the iPhone revolution where all the functions appeared on a screen versus a more or less sophisticated hardware,” VFX supervisor Philippe Denis tells Variety. “The shape design was simple but the functionality unlimited.”

Maya is an excellent and well-made feature-length documentary with timely and topical subject matter.
A year ago when Covid sent people into lockdown, Netflix debuted the series "Tiger King," which was about some eccentric characters keeping tigers in captivity in the USA. “Maya and the Three” was one of a six pack of original animated productions announced by Netflix in November of 2018, when the first and thus far only concept art was shared publicly. Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island” has been percolating for several years now, which is why many cinephiles were thrilled to hear the drama will have its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. “Bergman Island” will compete for the Palme d’Or, making Hansen-Løve one of only four women in competition at Cannes 2021. An international trailer for the film has been released, debuting the first footage of cast members Tim Roth, Vicky Krieps, Mia Wasikowska, and Anders Danielsen Lie.
“Bergman Island” centers around a filmmaking couple (Roth and “Phantom Thread” breakout Krieps) who travel to the island of Fårö, which is where Ingmar Bergman lived and died and shot scenes for iconic films such as “Through a Glass Darkly” (1961), “Persona” (1966), “The Passion of Anna” (1969), and “Scenes from a Marriage” (1972). It’s here where the couple’s relationship is tested as the line between reality and fiction starts to blur.

"Why her and not me?" French distributor Les Films du Losange has released the first trailer for Bergman Island, the highly anticipated new Mia Hansen-Løve film screening at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. It was announced as one of the Main Competition films in this year's Cannes line-up. This is her latest since making Maya in 2018, and Things to Come in 2016 as well. In Bergman Island, an American filmmaking couple go to the island where Ingmar Bergman was inspired and find that the lines between reality and fiction star to blur. It was filmed back in 2018 on the island Fårö in Sweden. Talented actors Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth star, with Mia Wasikowska, Anders Danielsen Lie, Joel Spira, and Clara Strauch. Sandalwood Neo-noir films usually have a cynical attitude and revolve around crimeSanjana DeshpandeRooted in the German Expressionist Movement, the style film noir emerged in the United States against the backdrop of the Great Depression which lasted from 1929 to 1933. The noir films usually had a cynical attitude and presented stories of crime. The films were largely associated with the black-and-white visual style and had low-key lighting. Neo-noir was an attempt at revival of the noir. Although the two genres are stylistically the same—replete with low-key lighting, unbalanced framing, Dutch angle, blurry boundaries between good and bad— a distinct feature sets them apart. Neo-noir was rooted more in the French New Wave which emerged in the 1950s. Quite a few Indian films have been made in neo-noir style, and the Kannada film industry too is trying to push boundaries with the genre. Here’s a list of five Sandalwood neo-noir films...

It is apropos that Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby is screening in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery platform. It is a discovery, in every sense: the discovery of a new comic voice behind the camera, the discovery of a note-perfect star in lead actor Rachel Sennott, and the discovery of a viewing experience that is at once hilarious, awkward, uncomfortable, and unforgettable. Shiva Baby is a blast of energy and from its first moment to its last Seligman finds the right balance. There is genuine suspense, if not horror; the score, by Ariel Marx, could just as easily fit a summer camp slasher flick. But the greatest feeling for the audience––after discomfort––is excitement.
In Seligman’s adaptation of her short film of the same name, Sennott plays Danielle, a young Jewish woman and student at Columbia who is rudderless. As the film opens, she is sleeping...

DreamWorks Animation series “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,” coming to Netflix on Sept. 18, immediately immerses viewers in the universe of the popular franchise — shaky camera shots, a roaring Tyrannosaurus rex and characters fleeing stampeding dinosaurs.
As we pull back, however, viewers can see the bedroom of young Darius (voiced by Paul-Mikél Williams), who’s playing a video game as he’s about to go off to Isla Nublar with other teen campers (and is soon to face similar terrors).
The meta opening is a grabber, but for CG lighting/compositing director Kathy Tran, whose job is to use subtle shades of light and color to give a show its look, the degree of difficulty in distinguishing between the world of a video game and an animated “real” world was high.
It took three tries to achieve the desired effect. The feedback from executive producer Scott Kreamer and supervising producer Aaron Hammersley...

Coming to Film Forum in New York City is “Black Women,” a 70-film screening series that spotlights 81 years – 1920 to 2001 – of trailblazing African American actresses in American movies.
Scheduled to run from January 17 to February 13, the series is curated by film historian and professor Donald Bogle, author of six books concerning blacks in film and television, including the groundbreaking “Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films” (1973).
“Last year, Bruce Goldstein, the repertory programmer at Film Forum, asked me if there was something I was interested in doing, and this was a topic that I had been thinking about, because I recently updated my book on the subject, ‘Brown Sugar,’ which dealt with African American women in entertainment from the early years of the late 19th century to the present,” said Bogle. “That’s really the way it came about, and it just developed from there.
