Following his debut British indie horror Citadel, director Ciarán Foy was headhunted by Scott Derrickson to direct Sinister 2. It was clearly a happy arrangement for all concerned, since he's staying with Jason Blum's prolific production company Blumhouse for his next project: an "elevated thriller" called The Shee. The story takes place in Ireland in the 1960s, where a troubled young woman is forced to face up to violent incidents from her troubled past when she travels to a remote island. We might surmise that the "Shee" are the aes sídhe: the elven folk from Irish mythology who can be dangerous and terrible if they're not appeased. Is "Shee" a contraction of "Banshee"? We'll find out...Foy has form here, having directed the award-winning short The Faeries Of Blackheath Woods in 2006. With Corin Hardy's The Hallow also incoming, it's suddenly a boom time for the mischievous fair folk.

After graduating from the National Film School of Ireland, Dublin-based filmmaker Ciarán Foy plied his trade directing a handful of shorts (including the larkish techno-driven Scumbot, in which a radio-controlled hooligan goes berserk and ultimately turns on his mates), finally winning a bounty of awards for his four-and-a-half-minute malicious-pixie tale The Faeries of Blackheath Woods. Encouraged by the response, Foy set to work in 2007 on a script based on a traumatic personal experience it had taken him years to shake: At age 18, he was randomly assaulted by a gang of toughs near his council flat and viciously threatened with a used hypodermic needle. After the incident, he suffered from acute agoraphobia, a condition he eventually conquered through counseling and lots of emotional support from his future wife, then a fellow college student. All of which provided grist for his debut feature, Citadel, which premiered at the 2012 South by Southwest Film...

Ciarán Foy grew up in Dublin, Ireland, and says that apart from his parents he was "raised by the works of Spielberg, Lucas and Cameron." He's been addicted to genre movies for as long as he can remember and has always wanted to be a director, "so I could create my own worlds." Foy attended the National Film School of Ireland. Before writing and directing his feature debut, "Citadel," his shorts included "The Faeries of Blackheath Woods" in 2006, which won a handful of Best Short Film festival awards. Foy considers "Citadel" half psychological horror and half autobiography; it was partly inspired by his own experience of "unprovoked urban attack and my battles with the resulting agoraphobia." What it's about: An agoraphobic father teams up with a vigilante priest to save his daughter from the clutches of a gang of twisted feral children. Ciarán says: The biggest challenges were; 1)...

Director Ciaran Foy first came to my attention a couple years back with his short film The Faeries of Blackheath Woods, a sharp little slap to the face executed with obvious technical skill and a solid sense of style. I programmed Faeries - which you can see embedded below - at a couple different festivals that year and filed Foy away as a director to keep an eye on.
Well, he's back now and currently in production on his debut feature, Citadel.
Using his own experience of having been the victim of an unprovoked urban attack and the sense of agoraphobia that brought on as fuel, Foy's film is the story of Tommy, a young man trapped in a council estate over run by hooded youth armed with syringes of some unknown substance. Here's how the Iftn describes it:
'Citadel' sees packs of twisted feral children prowl the dark urban landscape of Edenstown,...
