One of our own, the incorrigibly wicked Izzy Lee, is back with another macabrely mirthsome short film - A Favor - which just screened at no less a "dark heart of cinema" than FrightFest. Though I have only seen Lee's most recent other short, Postpartum, which impregnated my mind for days, her latest demonstrates a rapidly maturing prowess behind the camera. Coming in at 10 minutes, A Favor is a serious piece of film-making, polished on every level, and to my mind heralds Lee's transition from aspiring auteur to bona fide film-maker. A Favor is also hilarious throughout, though progressively darker, and pitch-black by the crescendo. Laughs flow freely thanks to a great performance by Shaun Callaghan as Jackson, a somewhat schluby hipster who gets called on...

The 18th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival kicks off tomorrow in Montreal, Canada. Team TwitchFilm is busy packing their bags and getting ready to descend on the city for our annual intake of fantastic cinema madness, smoked meat and the local brews. One of our own, Michele "Izzy" Galgana even has a short film playing at the festival. Her short Pospartum will screen in front of Lady Psycho Killer in the J.A. De Seve theatre on August 2nd! So as we take a tally of how many pairs of socks to bring you can peruse our suggestions for must-see flicks at the festival. Matthew Lillard has been cast in One of Our Own, an indie drama being directed by Abe Levy. Also cast are Josh Randall (Ed), Claire Rankin (Stargate: Atlantis) and Kate Beahan (The Wicker Man). Written by Levy and Silver Tree, the story begins when a thirtysomething couple, desperate to have a baby against all odds, engage a young woman to bear their child. When the man's boss falls in love with the surrogate and decides to become a father himself, chaos ensues, thrusting the couple's marriage to the brink of ruin. Lillard is playing the boss. He also is serving as co-producer. Producing the movie are Jack Robinson of Wild Horse Prods., Tree and Terry Chase Chenowith (Undertaking Betty). Wild Horse was behind 2005's Beautiful Dreamer. Entrepreneur Robert Sprowls is financing the pic and executive producing. Lillard, who played Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, most recently appeared in The Groomsmen, opposite Edward Burns. He also is known for his role in Scream. Lillard is repped by CAA, Mosaic and Ziffren Brittenham.
