"Orphan," one of my all-time favorite horror movies, is getting a prequel called "Orphan: First Kill." And that prequel has found a home at Paramount. Does this mean it might end up going straight to Paramount+ like the upcoming new "Paranormal Activity" and "Pet Sematary" movies? Or will the orphan subsequently known as Esther head to theaters instead? We'll have to wait and see. "Orphan: First Kill" brings back Isabelle Fuhrman as Leena, a mental patient who poses as a child in order to get close to – and murder – families.

Exclusive: Koreatown Ghost Story, a short film written and directed by Teddy Tenenbaum and Minsun Park, has been sold to Paramount Players with Tenenbaum and Park closing a deal to write and direct the full-length feature film. Neal Moritz and Original’s Toby Jaffe will produce, along with Jim Wedaa. Margaret Cho is attached to reprise her role from the short and will executive produce.
The film is a Supernatural horror tale based on a Korean marriage ritual – a young woman entertains a macabre offer that would let her pursue her dreams, for better or for much, much worse.
Tenenbaum and Park recently sold the pilot The Zone for NBC through ABC Studios and Melissa Rosenberg’s Tall Girl Productions, and they sold their spec horror feature Red Door to Columbia Pictures with Barry Josephson producing.
Wedaa’s credits include Brahms: The Boy II and the soon-to-be-released Netflix film Mixtape.

Actor, disability-inclusion advocate and double hand amputee John W. Lawson has been cast as Stanny in Paramount Players’ untitled “Pet Sematary” prequel, written and directed by Lindsey Beer.
“I have myoelectric hands… or what people commonly call ‘cyborg,’” Lawson jokes. “But most of the time, it’s just my hooks.”
This news makes the “Pet Sematary” prequel one of the first major horror fiction films to cast a double amputee in a starring role. Production on the movie, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian, began in August.
While many plot details remain under wraps, Paramount did share that in the script, Stanny was not originally without hands — after Lawson auditioned, the role was rewritten to suit him.

Much like its many victims, it seems like we can expect Pet Sematary to keep coming back. Paramount rebooted Mary Lambert‘s original film in 2019 and now they’re headed back to that particular bit of sour ground beyond the deadfall for another attempt at Stephen King‘s world. This time they’re doing a prequel story which […]

The ever-growing roster of Stephen King adaptations is expanding with “Chapelwaite,” Epix’s upcoming series adaptation of the horror author’s “Jerusalem’s Lot.” Epix released the trailer for the series, which stars Oscar winner Adrien Brody and “Schitt’s Creek” favorite Emily Hampshire. The horror series is set to premiere on August 22.
Per Epix, the series is set in the 1850s and follows Captain Charles Boone (Brody), who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea. However, Charles will soon have to confront the secrets of his family’s sordid history and fight to end the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations.
Hampshire plays Rebecca Morgan, an ambitious young woman who left Preacher’s Corners to attend Mount Holyoke College and has returned home with an advance to write a story for Atlantic Magazine.

Indie moviemaker Amy Seimetz pulls off the ultimate heist in “No Sudden Move.”
Though relatively unknown to most viewers, Seimetz slyly steals the star-studded film out from under the likes of Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro with her portrayal of a housewife who gets caught up in a dangerous plot to steal a priceless document.
The Steven Soderbergh film is now streaming on HBO Max, and Seimetz is nothing short of a revelation. Her character, Mary Wertz, is kidnapped by a group of small-time crooks who want to force her philandering, auto executive husband (David Harbour) to break into his office safe in order to give them some trade secrets. Just as she finds herself and her children staring down the barrel of a gun, Mary also discovers that her marriage is a sham when one of the robbers casually notes that her husband is sleeping with his boss’ secretary.

Zac Efron will star in “Firestarter,” a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel.
The film centers on a young girl who develops pyrokinetic powers and the ability to see the future. She is abducted by a mysterious government agency that plans to weaponize her superhuman skills. The film is backed by Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Weed Road Productions.
Efron, who first came to fame in the rosy “High School Musical” franchise, has shown his darker side in certain projects, playing Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” This feels in that vein. Efron’s other credits include “Neighbors,” “The Greatest Showman” and “The Paperboy.” He will next be seen in a remake of “Three Men and a Baby,” which feels very far removed from all things Ted Bundy and Stephen King.

The duo will lead A Castle for Christmas, which follows an American author, Sophie (Shields), who makes her way to Scotland, and immediately falls in love with a castle.
Yes, really.
Unfortunately, the owner, a Scottish Duke named Myles (Elwes), does not want to sell to a foreigner.
The duo butt heads as they try to come to some sort of resolution, but they "just may find more than they bargained for."
The outlet reports Mary Lambert, who brought Pet Sematary and The In Crowd to viewers, will direct the holiday flick.
More exciting is that the movie will be filmed on location in Scotland. As a Scotsman myself, I'm excited to see which locations are used, and how the country is portrayed.

Very few people have found their work adapted for both the big and small screen as regularly as prolific author Stephen King, who has proven to be a goldmine for Hollywood ever since horror classic Carrie was first released all the way back in 1976.
Since then, the Stephen King well has been revisited countless times with 52 movies and 30 TV shows materializing, covering everything from box office smash hits to colossal failures, spawning cult favorites and all-time greats in a variety of genres that include such diverse output as The Running Man and The Shining to The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption.
The latest boom period is still ongoing, with The Stand set to debut on CBS in December and a further eight shows in various stages of development, not to mention eleven feature-length films. The royalties alone that King is raking in must be seriously impressive, and that number...

CBS All Access‘ limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” will premiere Dec. 17, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The series will be a weekly one, with each of the subsequent eight episodes streaming one at a time every Thursday following that premiere. As previously announced, King penned the finale and also wrote a new coda that will take the story beyond where is 800-plus page 1978 tome left things.
“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” said showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades.

With what was supposed to be the summer movie season now just another relic of this pandemic-blasted year, and the rest of 2020’s major film releases in a continuing state of flux, it’s important to note that there has still been a fairly steady stream of new films coming out, some in limited theatrical release but others largely available via video on demand and streaming services.
With that in mind, and with the customary “opening weekend” a rather fluid and ambiguous term as well, below is a rundown of films we’ve caught in the past month, along with information on where you can find and watch them. Some are good, some not so much, but your mileage may vary for each. The important thing to know is that movies are still coming out–just not always in the ways we expect.

Netflix movie The Devil All the Time has released its first trailer, showcasing an impressive ensemble within a bleak piece of dramatic Gothic Americana. Indeed, the film is headlined by Marvel’s current big screen Spider-Man, Tom Holland, opposite DC’s imminently-debuting big screen Batman, Robert Pattinson, setting up a collision course of characters so seemingly epic, it might just make you forget to wish they were in their respective crimefighting outfits.
The film was directed by Antonio Campos, who worked off a script he co-wrote with brother Paulo Campos, adapting Donald Ray Pollock’s 2011 novel of the same name. Bearing a story spanning from World War II to the 1960s, the film is set in the rural Ohio town of Knockemstiff, centering around a young man (Holland) who not only discovers a dark secret about his family, but becomes threatened by some of the corrupt locals, most notably a...

Goose, “Captain Marvel” (2019)
Okay, Goose is technically not a cat. Carol Danvers’ orange sidekick is actually a flerken (an alien with massive tentacles hidden inside her mouth), but Goose’s fluffy coat and knack for getting into trouble puts her firmly in the cat category.
Binx, “Hocus Pocus” (1993)
Thackery Binx was just a normal teenage boy in 1693 before he was cursed to live forever in the body of a black cat. But hey, everyone goes through weird phases in their teens.
Cat, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961)
Let’s make this clear: Holly Golightly does not own this cat. He belongs to nobody and nobody belongs to him. But that doesn’t stop him from playing a pivotal role in the movie, including the tear-jerking final scene.
Jonesy, “Alien” (1979)
This orange tabby was the unofficial mascot of the Uscss Nostromo and one of the few crew members to survive a Xenomorph attack.

Actress and director Amy Seimetz accused her ex-boyfriend, director Shane Carruth, of years of emotional and physical abuse that include an attempt to strangle her on a bed, according to court documents obtained by TheWrap.
Seimetz, who directed the TV series “The Girlfriend Experience” and starred in “Pet Sematary,” filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order with the Superior Court of Los Angeles County on June 12. In it, she described several instances during their relationship, which she said began around December 2011 and officially ended in January 2018, where she says Carruth had “fits of rage and angry outbursts that led to him becoming emotionally, mentally, and physically abusive.”
Seimetz says that in October 2016, Carruth strangled her on a hotel room bed in New York, where she was staying while working on a film. She says that Carruth “was upset that I had gone to a dinner meeting with co-workers.

Actress and director Amy Seimetz has obtained a temporary restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, director Shane Carruth, accusing him of years of mental, emotional and physical abuse.
On one occasion in 2016, Seimetz alleges that Carruth jumped on her in a hotel room and strangled her until she struggled to breathe, according to filings attached to her application for the order. She also alleges that Carruth has continued to harass and abuse her since she broke up with him in 2018.
Both directors are prominent in the independent film world. Carruth’s first feature film, “Primer,” won the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. Seimetz starred in his second feature, “Upstream Color,” directed the anthology TV series “The Girlfriend Experience” and starred in “Pet Sematary.” More recently, she directed the film “She Dies Tomorrow,” which is due out this week from indie distributor Neon.

Are horror filmmakers running out of titles? If the generic title of The Luring is anything to go by, I would suggest that they are… and it’s a shame when good films are hidden behind generic titles.
The Luring kicks off with a nice young family viewing a holiday home in Vermont, but of course there was a tragedy at the house, that had little to do with the hammy acting of the estate agent. We then skip forward to our protagonist, who suffers from amnesia around his childhood, and seems to be related to his time in the family holiday home. The two things are connected. HBO Max still has a ways to go before being an established streaming platform, but the service does have one major thing going for it right now: an impressive back-catalogue of movies from Warner Bros. and the other WarnerMedia divisions. With the service looking to close in on the market share of Netflix, Amazon Prime and the other industry giants, we’ll be seeing HBO Max bolster its library of over a hundred horror movies with twelve new titles arriving on July 1st.
Of the new films, we’re getting the Blade trilogy, which starts off strongly with the 1998 and 2002 installments, before suffering a pretty significant dip in quality by 2004’s Blade: Trinity. With the reboot of the vampire franchise still on the way though, now’s a good time to catch up on Wesley Snipes’ original take on the character.

Stephen King’s 2014 novel “Revival” is his latest book coming to the big screen.
Warner Bros., the studio behind King’s “It” franchise, is developing the movie. Mike Flanagan is on board to adapt the script with an option to direct. Trevor Macy, who teamed with Flanagan on the 2019 adaptation of King’s “Doctor Sleep,” will produce through Intrepid Pictures.
“Revival” spans five decades, opening in a small New England town, where a charismatic minister meets a small boy playing with his toy soldiers.
