Interesting Late Silent Biography of A Portugese/Italian Saint
lchadbou-326-2659217 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This late Italian silent was recently posted on the Cineteca Del Friuli site. I'm not sure how many such biographies were filmed on the lives of saints, but it's possible that when Roberto Rossellini made his great Francesco Giullare Di Dio almost twenty years later, he had a hazy memory of this work as a template. The episodic scenario packs in a lot of story as it shows the legends this Italian priest, originally from Portugal,is remembered for, including as the title indicates the miracles some of which, like being in Padua and Lisbon at the same time, may seem preposterous. The execution is that of a crude religious pageant, with references to the Moslems of the 13th century as "infidels," definitely not politically correct by today's standards. But the movie is not without a certain charm, such as the scene with Antonio as a boy and the birds, and has a definite curiosity value.

Illustrated Lives of the Saints version

If you're Catholic and like Anthony you will like this. It's like those old illustrated lives are the saints books. They take the main episodes of his life and act them out in little vignettes. The movie is one of the last of the silent films. The titles are in Italian and English. It is a very quaint film which points us to holiness.

ball of emotions and thoughts

Correct portrait of a great Romano - Catholic saint , it has all the sweetness and the drops of nostalgia who you expect about it.

A gallery of periods of Anthony of Padova life, from childhood, real special to miracles and fights, to the death, it is just inspired crafted, not impressing, off ourse, but being just touching.

A simple story, decent performances, good and useful remind of familiar hagiographical episodes and defined by titles in English and Italian.

So, not a story but a seed for a large ball of thoughts and emotions.

Nothing special but, in my case, just a lovely memory and fair pledge for saint discover.
