Werewolf: The Unicorn is set in a town where several prostitutes have been brutally murdered. Eric Cord (John J. York) is working as a taxi driver in town where one night he picks up a prostitute named Chrissy (Traci Lin) who wants a ride home, outside her apartment she is hassled by her pimp's muscle man. Eric comes to her rescue & is stabbed in the process, Chrissy nurses his wound & lets him stay the night at her place. The next morning & Chrissy is contacted by the police to identify the body of another murdered prostitute, her friend Denise. Then Chrissy is told by bounty hunter Alamo Joe Rogan (Lance LeGault) that Eric is responsible for the killings, confused she is not sure what to do while word gets around that Eric is the killer & has people on both sides of the law looking for him...

Episode thirteen from the one & only season of Werewolf this originally aired in the US during October 1987, directed by Lyndon Chubbuck this is another great episode in a generally very good show & a big improvement on the disappointment that was the two parter A World of Difference (1987) that directly preceded it. Here the old horror & serial killer thriller stand by of having some killer targeting prostitutes is utilised, the actual killer is Skorzeny but Eric is blamed although unusually Skorzeny & Eric never meet in this episode which I think is the first time both have appeared in the same story & not met. Bounty hunter Rogan also has a reasonable part in this one too so all the regular's are here & have good roles. The one thing that impresses me about this show is that the writing of the character's is usually very good in such a short space of time, Chrissy the prostitute for instance really isn't given much screen time but she does come across as a real person with a background & ends up being quite likable. The whole plot about who is killing the prostitutes is supposed to be a mystery but it's fairly obvious that it's Skorzeny since not many people wear eye-patches...

There are a couple of neat Werewolf transformation scenes here, Skorzeny as usual pulls the skin on his face back to reveal his true Werewolf head while sharp fangs & a snout emerge from Eric's mouth in a couple of good special effect scenes. The Unicorn is nicely shot too, from the opening montage of the street with seedy sex cinemas advertising 'XXX' features & scantily clad prostitutes standing there. Traci Lin looks very sexy in leather & stockings & stiletto's & there's plenty of full length shots of her which is understandable! This episode has a nice sleazy sort of feel with it's pimp's, prostitutes, seedy locations & it's sadistic killer on the loose plot. Horror film favourite Tony Todd has a small role as a pimp who wants to inject battery acid into Eric in revenge for killing his girl...

The Unicorn is a great episode in a good series & it's nice to see the show back on track so quickly after A World of Difference. If anyone is interested the title The Unicorn actually refers to a sentimental necklace that Chrissy wears & nothing to do with mythological one horned horse's.
