Joey and the Beard (#2.18)

Warning: Spoilers
Joey is assigned as a beard to a lesbian actress. But he doesn't realize it right away and tries to hit on her. Then as he keeps on helping her she comes out during an awards show. Jimmy who has no place to live decides to move in with Gina, but this doesn't work as whenever they have a fight they end up staying at different places, but Joey locks them at Alex's place and they work it out.

Good episode. Gina and Jimmy once again were a hilarious couple. And the way Alex ran out of her home when Joey brought them was pretty awesome!

The beard story was also very well done, I especially liked the part when Joey finally understood what is going on.

Joey needed to grow
studioAT12 June 2016
One of them main aims of the Joey spin-off was to show some growth to the character. But all too often this was sacrificed in favour of a cheap laugh.

For the most part of this episode though Joey is showing signs of this but at the vital moment the writers opt to make him out to be dumb again and it's a shame. Whereas 'Friends' allowed the characters to grow episode on episode, 'Joey' seems to hit the restart button each time.

This episode and the last at times were quite lazy in terms of jokes, and you can imagine how hard it must have been at this stage to keep pushing for the best joke when you knew it would unlikely to be heard by many.

Jimmy as a character continues to grow in screen time, and this is surely largely down to Adam Goldberg's performance and the audience reaction to it. The B story involving him and Gina isn't great, but it's fun to see another character taking the weight off of Joey. In contrast, Andrea Anders and Paulo Costanzo are largely passengers here.

After a couple of episodes of dormancy, the Joey/Alex relationship begins to stir again, giving the sense that we are building to something.

Overall, a decent episode, but again one that can't build on a good premise.
