Shop Til You Drop

Michael and Stephanie want to do a home shopping show on WPIV. It takes all her wiles to get Dick to agree. When they finally do the show, Dick is a disaster, but Stephanie charms the viewers into buying loads of junk. Dick realizes how bad he is and models himself after one of those fast talking TV sales people on the big networks. When he returns he is so phony and out there that he is hilarious (Bob Newhart is superb). The problem is that after one show, Stephanie has had enough. In a quiet subplot, George is nostalgic for his late mother's pudding and Joanna kindly tries to make it for him. She tries and tries to get it just right and the results are pretty funny.

Strange Dickie Loudon TV Pitchman

Michael starts a home shopping show with Dick and Stephanie as co hosts.

A funny satire on home shopping shows, just gaining popularity at the time. Stephanie generates most of the sales with her cutesy posing, Dick tries to become a more aggressive salesman. It's funny to see the normally low key Newhart being loud and obnoxious in the style of "crazy" TV pitchmen of the time. One of them in the New York area was "Crazy Eddie" in the 1970s.
