"Lisa on Ice" remains one of my all time favourite Simpsons episodes. It demonstrates what a brilliantly layered and textured comedy should look like. The overall premise of Bart and Lisa's sibling rivalry, fueled by Homer's escalating push for competition is a winner in itself but what really impressed me about the episode was the density and frequency of so many smart, witty jokes throughout. This typifies vintage Simpsons for me and something I find magical about the show is not matter how many times I have seen an episode I always seem to discover new jokes that I had missed before. Some of my favourites of the episode include Lisa's discovery that Monster Island is actually a peninsula and Homer's unfulfilled request for ketchup for his salad.

Competition drives a wedge through the Simpsons' household

Warning: Spoilers
I dare say, this is one of the best Bart and Lisa episodes from the entire run of The Simpsons. The episode deftly explains and expands on the relationship between the two siblings. From the hilarious lows of indiscriminately punching and kicking the air in an attempt to hurt the other without taking blame for it to the heartwarming highs of remembering their shared history at the end, this episode is a winner.

Homer is an irredeemable jerk in this episode. He escalates, really all but creates, the feud between Bart and Lisa. His role in the episode is a brilliant skewer of parents who put too much emphasis on their children's athletic endeavors.

In the end, Bart and Lisa keep their heads and strengthen their bond as the combustible mob that is the Springfield citizenry explodes over their refusal to cut the other down. A defining moment for Bart and Lisa's relationship, indeed.

HACK THE BONE!

Lisa takes up Ice Hockey as a means of passing her gym class.

This is an excellent episode with great parody and humour.

Lisa On Ice is a great Bart and Lisa story that has a nice little arc about sibling rivalry and the strength of their bond. One moment is very sweet and if you have children who are close you should appreciate it.

Most of all it uses the behaviour of Homer and others to rip excessively competitive parents to shreds. There's nothing worse than these type of people screaming from the sidelines and this episode captures it well with some ridiculous characterisations.

For me the humour is quite prolific as the punchlines come thick and fast throughout the episode.

For me it's a 9.5/10 but I round upwards.

Maybe the best Lisa episode

Warning: Spoilers
Headline says it all.

First off, this episode gets a 10/10 on laughs alone. Pound-for-pound (joke-for-joke?) one of the funniest episodes of the entire show.

Every Simpson is firing on all cylinders in this episode. Even Maggie gets a good laugh or two. Not the first or the last episode with a "Lisa gets popular while Bart becomes an outcast" story, but it works well here. The sibling rivalry is also very well-written. Bart and Lisa do not like each other at all for most of this episode. Homer and Marge are excellent complements to the kids, playing "good parent bad parent," with Homer pitting the kids against each other and egging on their beef while Marge continually tries to get them to make peace and not be violent to each other. The resolution of the conflict is A+ material. A damn fine episode of television.

Quick Hands

Lisa is non-athletic but has quickness when it comes to stopping things. She becomes a goalie on Abu's hockey team and is responsible for an undefeated season. In the final game, she faces Bart with whom she has developed an intense rivalry. The whole thing is quite touching.

Ice Ice Baby

Warning: Spoilers
Another peak Simpsons episode from the golden era, which in my humble opinion, is the first 10 seasons of The Simpsons. Anyway, here it's Bart v Lisa on the ice hockey rink and it was so moving and hilarious at the end where the siblings square off against each other to lead to a moving denouement worthy of a peak Simpsons episode for sure.

No guest names in this episode, although imagine if Wayne Gretzky had appeared, but not to be. Anyway, Lisa on Ice is worth watching more than once and it's entertaining and moving and emotional and so on because that's what The Simpsons is really and init.
