When the Illusionist is performing at the Scottish pub, one of the patrons in the foreground, near the middle of the frame, is the famous "Young Girl and Old Woman" optical illusion.
When the illusionist and the girl are eating fish and chips on the sidewalk, the menu items, featuring haggis, on the wall behind them are almost identical to the menu items given by the waitress in Monty Python's famous "Spam" sketch.
When Jacques tries to hide from the girl, he ends up in a theater, The Cameo, where My Uncle (1958) by Jacques Tati is shown. "L'illusionniste"'s script was first written by Jacques Tati, whose figure and character was taken to create the main character Jacques Tatischeff (Tati's original name).
Most of the film was done in wide shots, there are very few mid shots and there aren't any close-ups.
The film is based on a previously unproduced script by Jacques Tati, and stars an animated version of Tati himself.
