The rising star on transitioning from man to beast for Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.
When Owen Teague was four years old, he saw Disney’s Beauty And The Beast and wanted to be in it. Not do a voice in it — actually be in it. “My mum was like, ‘Um, okay, sure, but that’s an animation. There are community theatres you can audition for?’” So he started doing community theatre, mostly musicals. Then, in 2005, Peter Jackson’s King Kong arrived. Seven-year-old Owen was bewitched. When his mum explained that King Kong was played by an actual guy in a performance- capture suit, Teague saw his future.
Almost 20 years later, he is that guy. In Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, Teague plays the lead, Noa, a young chimpanzee born nearly 300 years after the events of the last film in the franchise. After a successful audition...

In the world of anime, there are very few characters who can compare themselves to the might of Son Goku from the famous Dragon Ball series by Akira Toriyama. He is considered to be one of the strongest characters in the anime industry. Not only that but many other characters in the anime world have been inspired by the Dragon Ball protagonist.
Goku transforming into Super Saiyan
Although he has proven himself to be one of the strongest characters, he still aspires to grow and become stronger. However, Goku is not all about strength and power. He is also one of the best-written characters the Dragon Ball franchise has ever had. But there is one field where Goku might not have proven to be the best version of himself, and that is fatherhood.
While many fans believe Goku has been a decent father to Gohan, other Dragon Ball fans have...

Celebrity Race Across the World has landed a second season on the BBC. The format from Traitors maker Studio Lambert sees pairings featuring one celebrity and a parent, sibling or friend set a challenge to head on an epic adventure on a limited budget. In Season 1, which the BBC said is its “biggest factual entertainment brand of the year to date,” the likes of McFly drummer Harry Judd and broadcaster Alex Beresford were set the task of racing from Africa to the Arctic. Season 2’s route will be revealed in due course. The non-celebrity version has run for three seasons and has also been a big hit for the BBC. Factual entertainment boss Catherine Catton said she had been “delighted with the reaction particularly from young audiences” to Season 1 of the celebrity run. The news comes just a few days...

Beijing, Sep 5 (Ians) A subtype of avian flu virus, endemic in poultry farms in China, is undergoing mutational changes, which could increase the risk of the disease being passed on to humans, warns a study.
Researchers in China and Nottingham, the UK, also said that the findings raise concerns of a potential epidemic or pandemic in the making and that concerted research is necessary to closely monitor such viruses in poultry and humans.
The results, published in the journal Cell, report on the characterisation of a human isolate — from a human patient — of the H3N8 avian influenza virus (Aiv).
Using laboratory mice and ferrets as models for human infection, the study found that the virus has undergone several adaptive changes to cause severe animal infections and making it transmissible by the airborne route between animals.

New York, Aug 19 (Ians) Severe Covid-19 may cause long-lasting alterations to the innate immune system, the first line of defence against pathogens, according to a small study.
These changes may help explain why the disease can damage so many different organs and why some people with long Covid have high levels of inflammation throughout the body.
The study, published online in the journal Cell, examined immune cells and molecules in blood samples from 38 people recovering from severe Covid and other severe illnesses, as well as from 19 healthy people.
Notably, researchers led by Steven Z. Josefowicz, from the Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City in the US, established a new technique for collecting, concentrating and characterising very rare blood-forming stem cells that circulate in the blood, eliminating the need to extract such cells from bone marrow.
In these rare stem cells — the parents of immune-system cells — taken from people recovering from Covid,...

The works of Stephen King are one of (if not the) biggest reasons that I fell in love with horror. With so many of his novels and short stories having been turned into feature films, it’s kind of hard to have never watched at least one – even if by accident. You have classic films such as The Shining and Pet Sematary, and then you have adaptations that you’re better off just reading the book. Speaking of Cell, its two stars, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, happen to be in one of my all-time favorite King stories brought to life, 1408. Based on the short story of the same name, it started out as an audiobook (Blood and Smoke) before being printed in the collection, Everything's Eventual in 2002.
In the film, John Cusack plays Mike Enslin, an author who is highly skeptical of anything paranormal (even if writing about...

Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. We’re not including the made-for-tv films (which are legion), and the sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material,...

Singapore, May 14 (Ians) By studying the unusual ability of bats to host viruses without significant illness, scientists have discovered a protein that could unlock new strategies for fighting inflammatory diseases and ageing in humans.
The research, published in the journal Cell, is focused on multi-protein complexes called inflammasomes that are responsible for the overactive inflammation that causes serious symptoms in many diseases.
Inflammasomes are also implicated in functional decline in ageing.
The team discovered that a bat protein called ASC2 has a powerful ability to inhibit inflammasomes, thereby limiting inflammation.
“Bats have attracted great attention as a likely reservoir of the Sars-CoV-2 virus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic. But this unique ability to host yet survive viral infections could also have a very positive impact on human health if we can understand and exploit how they achieve this,” said Professor Wang Lin-Fa, at Duke-nus Singapore’s Emerging Infectious Diseases (Eid) Programme.

Why do so many child actors struggle? To be a good actor, you need self-awareness and empathy, and those are traits many children don't have. This makes Isabelle Fuhrman's performance in Jaume Collet-Serra's "Orphan" all the more exceptional.
In "Orphan," a Connecticut couple -- Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) -- is still reeling from the miscarriage of their third child. So, they decide to adopt. They're instantly charmed by a young Estonian girl named Esther (Fuhrman) and welcome her into their home. But Esther shows increasing sadism, culminating in the horrible truth: she's actually a 33-year-old serial killer, afflicted with hypopituitarism that prevented her body from aging with her mind.
"Orphan" -- released in 2009 -- was shot in late 2007 when Fuhrman was only 10 years old. In what was her second film appearance, she was a child playing the part of an adult who is playing the part of a child.

“Man has come to dominate the planet thanks to two essential traits. One is intelligence. The other has been the absolute willingness to kill anyone and anything that gets in his way.”
The Losers are taking that to heart as they run out of Boston Common. All around them, The Pulse has turned the world upside down: mothers are gnawing at their daughters, trucks are crashing into stores, explosions are deafening. Luckily, they find a peaceful retreat at Gaiten Academy, where they catch their breath to discuss Stephen King‘s Cell.
Join Losers Randall Colburn, Michael Roffman, Ana Marie Cox, and Jenn Adams as they revisit King’s 2006 novel. Together, they meditate on the reverberations of 9/11, the parallels to H.G. Wells and Richard Matheson, the hilarious digital marketing campaign around its release, and why this often feels like King’s version of a Greatest Hits album.

The Challenge veteran Devin Walker placed in the finals twice before taking home the win in season 38’s Ride or Dies. He recently opened up about how losing season 37 prompted his intense training.
Devin Walker on the mental toll ‘The Challenge 37’ loss took on him
After placing third during his rookie season, Devin Walker didn’t see another final until last season of The Challenge, season 37’s Spies, Lies, and Allies. However, he and Emy Alupei came up just short. The loss motivated Devin for season 38’s Ride or Dies, which he hadn’t discussed since a February 2023 interview with the MTV’s Official Challenge Podcast, which aired immediately following his first victory.
According to the Massachusetts native, he went through a “mental beating” after the Spies, Lies, and Allies loss that propelled him to train hard in the off-season.

On Sept. 8, 2017, New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures released It: Chapter One, the first of two movies based on the classic 1986 novel by Stephen King and a film destined to go down in cinema history as the highest grossing horror movie of all time.
Opening to a record-shattering 124 million and eventually earning 701 million worldwide (against a measly budget of 40 million or so), It: Chapter One was also a fantastic movie. It captured both the unimaginable terror of the entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (helped by a genuinely unnerving performance by Bill Skarsgard) and the emotional, coming-of-age story of the seven kids known as the Losers Club, who bond together to battle the malignancy under their town.
It: Chapter One also proved that a mainstream, high-quality, studio-backed picture could still be made from King’s work, after a nearly 20-year period in which many adaptations either did moderately well...

It would be fair conclusion to say that 2021 was a successful year for K-Dramas. The year, through many cable and national broadcasting networks, the country’s tv industry released many successful series. Streaming giant Netflix too came in strong, buying world-wide distribution rights to many popular titles, while also doubling down on their own original productions, investing heavily into content from the country and increasing output too, to the point of releasing a new K-Drama almost every month in the second half of last year. Of course, the success of a number of these shows is now well-known, but other streaming services like iQiyi, Viki etc. also played an important part in getting several Korean series out to the wider worldwide audience, resulting in a strong year for shows of various genres.
Without further ado, here is the list of the 20 best K-Dramas of 2021, in descending order.

The Cairo Film Festival’s Cairo Film Connection co-production platform wrapped Saturday with a glamorous prize ceremony which saw Egyptian first-timer Adhan El-Sherif’s “Ravens of the City” and French-Egyptian filmmaker Namir Abdel Messeeh’s “Life After Siham” stand out, though awards were widely spread.
“Ravens” of the City,” a gritty drama in development about a reckless hustler named Gharib who desperately needs cash to enter a street car race and falls prey to a money lender, scored four awards worth a total of $60,000 in cash. Some science fiction can embolden the human spirit, inviting us to step out into a wider universe to experience the vast and unimaginable wonders it has to offer. Some science fiction shows us how human ingenuity will solve even our greatest problems and improve our lives for the better.
Other science fiction points out that those vast and unimaginable wonders are terrifying and will probably try to eat you, while human ingenuity is better at nothing more than finding really imaginative ways to kill people.

"Only the creepiest unsolved mystery hack of all-time." Dark Sky Films has unveiled an official trailer for the mysterious lo-fi tech thriller Broadcast Signal Intrusion, which first premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts and becomes obsessed with uncovering the dark conspiracy behind them. This isn't actually a "sci-fi" film, because it's set in the 90s and all the technology in it is real, and some of the pirate broadcasts referenced actually happened (you can read about them for real). The only fiction in this is the noir mystery that James tries to solve by attempting to figure out what these broadcasts mean and if they have any connection to the disappearance of his wife. Harry Shum Jr. stars as James, with a cast including Chris Sullivan, Kelley Mack, Steve Pringle, and Justin Welborn.
