The phrase "wet drowning" is used to describe a victim who is alive while being submerged in liquid. The difference between wet or dry drowning is simply to do with whether the fluid enters the respiratory system or not. In a wet drowning, the fluid is breathed in; in a dry drowning the throat closes involuntarily to prevent fluid entering the lungs. From a technical standpoint, this means only a wet drowning is an actually a drowning, while a dry drowning is asphyxiation.
