Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Animal mistreatments at various points. Animals killed (see "Violence & Gore"). Chicks and chicken handled in groups like objects: stocked in cramped areas, thrown into baskets, sucked in and out of machines, falling on the floor, etc. Piglets castrated without anaesthesia. Sows milking their babies without any space to move. Cows milked immobilised by iron bars. Fish in overcrowded lakes sucked into machines and then killed.
  • Difficult workers' conditions: dismembering animals, working in noisy environments, making repetitive gestures, collecting bull sperm, inseminating sows, living in run-down places, working in salt mines, harvesting salads on their knees by night, etc.
  • Overall tense atmosphere accentuated by the fact scenes are long with practically no dialogues and no voice-over, which could have created a sense of distance.
