The third appearance of 7-foot-tall Richard Kiel as Voltaire, assistant of tiny Dr. Miguelito Loveless. For the first time, he speaks, which even draws a comment from Artemus Gordon. In his two previous appearances, Voltaire appeared to be mute, communicating entirely through gestures and facial expressions.
This episode was set in San Francisco in 1874, and features actor Jesse White as California Governor Lewis. In reality, the governor of California at the time was Newton Booth, a Republican who resigned from the office in 1875 after having been elected to represent the state in the US Senate. Interestingly, the look of the fictional Governor Lewis greatly resembles the official portrait of Newton Booth.
When Dr. Loveless and Voltaire open the satchel containing five million dollars that they have just stolen from Jeremiah Ratch, among the currency are bundles of 1864 Confederate twenty dollar bills, and 1915 Mexican Revolution Chihuahua Diez (10) Pesos banknotes.
The "false hearted lover is worse than a thief" song is "On Top of Old Smokey". While a traditional folk song of the southern Appalachian Mountains, this tune was unknown outside the mountains untill about 1917.
