A typical day at The West Wing
Xerces8823 January 2008
In this fairly light and fun introduction to The West Wing: Josh faces losing his job after offending Christians during an appearance on a talk show.

Leo must deal with 137 Cuban refugees who escaped on rafts and are seeking asylum.

Each character is introduced finding out on phone or pager about the President having a bicycle accident. This was a wonderful way of introducing the characters, it briefly shared some character traits and boasted a few nice looking sets.

The set of The West Wing was wonderfully put together and looked genuine. There is a long tracking shot through many rooms of the set and I was very impressed by their detail and that the rooms were all connected.

The character of Sam holds the episodes melodrama by accidentally sleeping with a call girl then telling unknowingly tells Leo's daughter about it. This may put his career on the line.

The pilot had a very upbeat and comedic tone. The dialogue was fast-paced and witty. The characters were interesting and they are the main reason I shall continue watching. The nature of the show allows them to deal with very serious subject matter which I am sure they will. This episode didn't delve into anything of great depth, but the light-hearted comedy was interesting enough. However, the great dialogue mixed with character-study and serious political subject matter is what I am hoping for.

Welcome to the West Wing

This is a wonderful pilot episode of what became a wonderful show (well, at least for the first four years), penned by the incredible talent that is Aaron Sorkin.

To introduce and get us to like all those characters, even the minor ones, and establish the world that is the daily life of West Wing staffers, as well as trying to tell a story, was a huge task, but it's all carried off in style.

A lovely first episode.

Off and Running

This is a pilot that Aaron Sorkin sets in motion, bouncing off walls, clashing, running through tunnels and hallways, and on and on. One of the most ambitious and satisfying shows ever on TV. I hadn't watched this episode for ten years and it was so enjoyable. It shows the wheeling and dealing that goes on in the White House and the characters that make it happen. I'm sure with the polarized environment of the day, viewers will try to impose their own views. But it's a gem no matter what.

The start of something incredible.

Warning: Spoilers
I just recently began watching The West Wing for the first time. Having been a big fan of Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip, I knew I should give it a try, and so far I've been glad I did. Josh Lyman won me over pretty quickly(Whitford is such a great actor), as Toby(Schiff) did eventually. Sam(Lowe) I'm still not sure about, he's just that kind of charming that I find annoying, but I think I'll come around. Leo(Spencer) and CJ(Janney) both showed potential and I think I'll end up liking them both. The last 7 or so minutes of the episode was one of the best scenes I've yet to see on television. When Toby, Josh, and CJ sat down with Rev. Al and the Lamb Of God nutbars. Bartlet's(Sheen) entrance was just beautiful,

"I am the lord your God. Thou shalt worship no other god before me. Boy, those were the days, huh?"

Though I think my favorite line from the episode was,

"She was calling us New York Jews, Josh." "Well being from Connecticut I didn't mind so much."

An excellent Pilot that drew me in and left me anxiously awaiting the next episode.

THE WEST WING: SEASON 1, EPISODE 1: Pilot

Warning: Spoilers
THE WEST WING: SEASON 1, EPISODE 1: Pilot Directed by: Thomas Schlamme Written by: Aaron Sorkin

The series gets off to a strong start with a montage of all the important players and how they are called from their regular lives to step into work which happens to be in the white house for the President. The Aaron Sorkin rapid fire dialogue is strong from the beginning with the walking & talking the series came to be known for being so comforting. The series sets up the supporting players of the show long before the introduce the President and while he is the topic of conversation up until he appears I think this was the perfect choice because it shows how strong the entire ensemble of characters are.

Bradley Whitford as Josh is a standout early on as he gets an important subplot in the pilot, Whitford has gone to many other great starring roles but i'll always think of him primarily for his work on this series. Rob Lowe playing Sam Seaborn is another major character of this pilot and his sexual entanglement with a call girl provides some genuine character beats and sort've feels like a nice romance is budding if only they weren't in the lives they lived.

The direction of the pilot is strong and I find the W. G. Snuffy Walden musical score so pleasant and really important for underscoring the scenes which mostly involve people talking one on one. Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet enters speaking from the bible "I am the Lord your God. Thou shalt worship no other god before me." and with these words he makes a powerful entrance and instantly shows a strong stamp on what the series would become. Sheen wasn't meant to have a major role throughout the series but with this compelling introduction I do not know how the show could've worked any other way.

This is an incredible pilot episode as it manages to pack in a lot of character introductions as well as provide a great political conversation which the show would have many times throughout its run.
