The Last Battle
Scarecrow-883 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Those damned evil Nazis are up to their old tricks again, plans for global domination, with designs to form a Fourth Reich out of the ashes of nuclear devastation, hoping the Seaview will fall right into their laps when they kidnap Admiral Nelson, using him as bait to draw the sub into a set trap. Whose grand masterplan is this: Scroder (John Van Dreelen), having survived war criminal hunts, the bombings on Germany, and other attempts on his life, drawing inspiration from orders by the Fuhrer himself. Drugged while on an airplane by Nazi agents of Schroder, taken against his will, placed in a prison camp with other brilliant minds (renowned nuclear specialist, most gifted Olympian athlete, well-regarded psychologist, electrical genius…), Nelson will have to devise a plan to stop Schroder from the ultimate goal of using the Seaview from firing missiles into both Washington and Moscow, understanding that both countries, the US and Russia would retaliate, resulting in global devastation of a supreme magnitude. Using resources at their disposal, the group come up with a shortwave radio and homemade bombs created from materials found in the camp, but when Schroder seems to know of their plans ahead of time, it might be possible a traitor is among them. Consider this a plot reminiscent of The Great Escape as Nelson and company try to outsmart/outfox the devious, meticulously cunning, and always one-step-ahead Schroder. While most of the episode takes place on the camp with the prisoners, Crane and the Seaview try to figure out a way to sneak in unannounced, although Schroder already knows they are coming. You had to realize eventually the Nazis would find their way into a plot of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but how Nelson pulls a fast one on Schroder is quite satisfying. Dreelen is a memorable heel, proud, lecherous, cold-blooded, and determined, a brilliant but warped mind that delights in listening to a speech by Hitler and relishes telling Nelson of the Reich's plans for a dominant reign as supreme powers. If you don't hate his stinking guts, then you must be a Nazi sympathizer…Dreelen is that devilish.

A nutty Nazi and his insane plan to create the Fourth Reich!
planktonrules3 October 2017
The plot to "The Last Battle" seems pretty silly today, though back in the 1960s several other programs (such as "Mission: Impossible") had episodes about a Fourth Reich. After all, WWII was only 20 years in the past and the notion of a reformed Nazi empire didn't seem quite as ridiculous as it does now. This is NOT to say the episode isn't silly!

The show begins with Admiral Nelson aboard an airliner when the seemingly impossible occurs...several armed passengers take him prisoner, don parachutes and make Nelson leave the plane mid-flight! It's very much like what happened just a few years later with D.B. Cooper and his infamous air-escape.

Soon Nelson finds himself in a weird POW camp...along with several other top scientists who have been reported dead or missing. It seems a nutty Nazi has kidnapped them to use them to create weapons for him. He also plans on capturing the Seaview when it inevitably comes to rescue him. What is the nutty Nazi's plan? To start a nuclear war between the USA and USSR and when they've destroyed each other, his new and improved Nazis will rule what's left of the world!

The bottom line is that although the idea is silly, the episode is fun to watch. Of course, MANY episodes of the series are silly...so you cannot really hold this against the episode. Worth seeing if you are a fan.

I Like It But I Don't Like It

In 1973, some Germans wish to rule the world with the help of Nelson and Seaview.

A very hard episode to review. I like it but I don't like it.

Despite the serious nature of the plot, there is a Hogan's Heroes (Nelson's Heroes?) feeling about this hour which I just can't shake away. And does any viewer actually think this group of people could rule the world?

Irwin Allen pinched the POW set from a soon to be released Fox Film.

The music used in The Last Battle is better than most of the other music heard in previous season one episodes. The music was re-used in a Time Tunnel episode also about WW2 titled: Invasion.

The Last Battle held me from beginning to end but I just can't decide on a rating out of ten?

Leftover Nazi Uniforms

This is a pretty bad episode where Allen again tries to meld mid-20th century events with his sci-fi nuclear submarine series. The results are laughable. I thought I had dropped into the Star Trek "Patterns of Force" episode. He must have had a bunch of Nazi costumes around and some old island hut sets from previous films.

Don't blink, or you will miss the ten second denouement that explains virtually nothing. The Seaview, just before, had been diving in a piece of stock footage - much to the apparent amusement of Chip - with no explanation of where they were or how it related to Nelson's location or captivity. He was being held on an island, not at the "bottom of the sea".

Warning: Spoilers
But I will say it starts off good. We're looking at and early 1960s airliner. Now here's an interesting part and here's a spoiler, is the stewardess in on it? Because she wants Admiral Nelson to have food even though he's not hungry. But later when the hijacking goes on, she tries to stop it.

And if you watch it the guy sitting next to Nelson put something in his drink. Actually Nelson does it. However then we get to the Island full of Nazis and Hitler's speech. Which I could do without.

This would probably be never be made today. Chock full of swastikas.

Irwin Allen certainly borrowed quite a bit on this one cuz he had a nice outside set. I'm watching it again right now.
