Dr.Randolph Mason ( Jock Gaynor ) is being interviewed for a television programme concerning his latest project, an attempt to harness the power of electro-magnetism. Only one man opposes the scheme - Admiral Harriman Nelson. Without warning, Nelson appears and shoots the scientist dead, before the eyes of millions of amazed viewers. One of these amazed viewers is Nelson himself, watching from the Nelson Institute of Marine Research. The Admiral has discovered that Mason's electro-magnet is so strong, so powerful it is literally pulling the Moon from its orbit and putting it on a collision course with the world.
The Seaview sets sail, with Nelson smuggled aboard in a crate. They know where the electro-magnet is, and intend destroying it. Also aboard is Mason ( the man killed on live television was a fake ). The deranged scientist has the unique ability to change his features to resemble anybody ( he earlier impersonated Nelson at the studio ). He could be anyone aboard...
This is more like it. After an eternity of instalments in which the Seaview crew rarely ventured outside the ship, we get an episode in which a decent chunk takes place in the outside world. It harks back to the thrilling spy stories of the early part of Season 2. There's even a nice little sequence in which Crane drives off in a sports car from the Nelson Institute, and is tracked by Mason's men.
The plot makes no sense whatever. For some strange reason, no-one seems to notice that the Moon is heading towards the Earth and Mason's impersonations are remarkable in that he is not merely able to copy someone's face but also height and voice patterns! Don't think about this one too much, just enjoy.
