The American Legal System

It's a good thing for Karl Boehm and pregnant wife Ilse Taurins that when he is arrested for the murder/robbery of a rancher that he falls into the hands of Judge Garth. When Doug McClure and another of the Shiloh ranch hands citizen arrests him, Lee J. Cobb gives him a Miranda type warning. The good judge is about a century ahead of his time in anticipating that.

Boehm who is from Latvia also learns about the 5th Amendment, due process, presumption of innocence and a few other things they don't have in Latvia. That and Cobb's defense of him save his bacon.

Of course this doesn't sit well with a few townspeople chiefly the victim's son Robert Duvall. Still the law is the law.

One of the best Virginian episodes out there.

Golden episode
pfors-647-5014974 May 2013
Most TV western episodes that attempted to explore the foreign immigrant experience in the Old West fell back on clichés and stereotypes, but not this bold, engrossing drama featuring acclaimed Austrian star Karlheinz Bohm and directed by veteran, German-born studio artisan John Brahm. Bohm plays a struggling itinerant longing to find meaningful work, a home for his family and acceptance in his new land. He's more often extended a cold shoulder instead of a helping hand though, a clear motivation for his periodic violent outbursts. The young Robert Duvall, already a masterful curmudgeon, symbolizes the pilgrim's anxiety as a homicide victim's hostile son.

Disturbing Themes, and Conclusion
salad196420 January 2015
The Virginian is the only western I watch, but this one leaves many concerns.

I have grown to like episodes where The Virginian, Trampas, or Steve, carries the show, especially when they are away from Medicine Bow.

I like Mr. Cobb, but either his scripts, or the fact that he was very unhappy with the show, clearly shows in almost every episode.

Further, while I recognize that our nation, came from immigrants, many aspects of this episode are disturbing.

I think it might spoil the plot for you, so I will just say that justice was not served here, at all, and the script seemed to teach people that a crime, can be allowed, under certain legal conditions.

Good acting, but quite a few problems about morals, were presented.
