Episode 1.1

Much has been said about similarities of Two in Clover with The Good Life.

From the introductory voiceover in the first episode, to me it is The Odd Couple.

Sid (Sidney James) is more streetwise and Vic (Victor Spinetti) is more fussy. They are bored office workers who pack it all in to leave the rat race.

Vic persuades Sid to become a partner in a farm.

The first episode very much takes in the delipidated farm they have bought with two lavatories, which turn out to be side by side on the outside.

However Sid and Vic think they can be in the money with the generous subsidies on offer. Not realising that they get not for the amounts of cows they have but the milk they produce.

Sidney James can make below par material funny and here he has a good script to work it. He works well with Victor Spinetti, someone who used to be one of my mum's favourites. She always remarked that he never used to age.

Getting back to nature

Warning: Spoilers
The sad death of Victor Spinetti has just been announced. By way of a small tribute, I thought I'd mention the first episode of the I.T.V. sitcom he did with the equally missed Sid James - 'Two In Clover'. 'Sid Turner' and 'Vic Evans' are office workers who decide to quit their jobs ( and smash up the office where they work ) and get back to nature. To this end, they buy Clover Farm, which is run-down and in the middle of nowhere. On learning from a 'Mr.Holloway' ( Edwin Richfield ) from the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries, of the generous subsidies they can claim, they decide to pull a scam and say they have more cattle than they actually do, but it backfires and they find themselves having to buy gallons of milk in order to meet the demand they have unwittingly imposed on themselves...

Vince Powell and Harry Driver's sitcom was Sid's first since the hugely popular 'George & The Dragon' ( in which he co-starred with Peggy Mount ). Once again, Sid is paired with a performer of equal ability, and the results are hugely enjoyable. The first episode shot to the top of the ratings, and this was in early 1969, also the time that 'On The Buses' made its debut. 'Clover' did not last as long, but it is fondly remembered.

Funniest moment - Sid, about to milk a cow, asks Vic if they have any of that new-fangled milking equipment. Vic says yes, before producing a bucket and a stool!
