One of the answers during the Carnac routine is "Saturday Night Live," and the question is, "Name something dead." This may be confusing to younger viewers, who won't know that the reference is not to NBC's iconic late-night program, which was then known as "NBC's Saturday Night," but to a short-lived prime-time variety show on ABC hosted by Howard Cosell. Indeed, it left the air about six weeks after this broadcast, and shortly after NBC was given permission to add "Live" to its show's title.
The movie version of Irwin Shaw's novel NIGHTWORK which Shaw and Irving "Swifty" Lazar attempt to convince Johnny Carson to appear in (offering one million dollars) was never made.
