TALES OF WELLS FARGO "The Auction" 1957
TALES OF WELLS FARGO was a western series than ran for a total of 200 episodes between 1957 and 1962. Dale Robertson plays the lead as Jim Hardee. Hardee is an agent for the stage and cargo hauling outfit, Wells Fargo. When something goes wrong, he is the man they send to fix it.
This episode is the 22nd of the series.
Wells Fargo detective, Dale Robertson is taking in an auction of unclaimed cargo when he spots several criminal types attending. The three, Edgar Buchanan, John Carlyle and Margaret Stewart are all bidding on the same old beat up suitcase. Robertson of course suspects a fox in the hen-house when the bidding reaches 200 bucks on the 50 cent suitcase. Robertson outbids the rest for the suitcase. He wants to see what all the fuss is about.
Not 5 minutes after claiming the suitcase he gets a pistol butt to the back of his head. He hits the ground out like a light, and the suitcase is lifted. Robertson is less than amused when he regains his senses. He figures it must be one of the three who clobbered him, but who? A little bit of digging around and following of certain individuals soon turns up a clue or two. It turns out that the suitcase holds a fairly large amount of cash from a robbery. The holdup man had simply checked the suitcase in at a Wells Fargo office for safe keeping. The man, Greg Barton, however gets arrested and sent up to prison.
Anyways, the different players here have all heard through various means about the cash. They all intend to lay their paws upon said spoils. Our man Robertson needless to say foils these plans for everyone. Guns are pulled and lead exchanged with several of the villains soon ready for a 6 foot deep hole in the ground.
This is not one of the better episodes, but I must admit, it is always a hoot to see Edgar Buchanan in anything.
