In the sprint of 1882, the Kansas City Special was held up near Knob Point, Missouri. Jim Hardie's friend, Pat McNeal, a messenger on the train was killed trying to save the money. Hardie is sent to find the Jesse James gang and the money but he knows Jim Hardie would be killed so he arrives in Independence, Missouri posing as a cameraman under the alias Jim Henderson. Forced to buy a horse and buggy when he says he is looking for the Jesse James farm, he makes his way there. As he nears the farm, he is stopped and told to turn around by Tom Rankins, a member of the gang. Jim gets by Rankin and makes it to the farm where he is met by Ma Samuel, Jesse's mother. He tells her he is a photographer and wants to write a book about the real Jesse James. Jesse likes Jim but the other four gang members don't. He soon finds what he is seeking but it isn't Jesse.
