A good written episode!
mm-399 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Underground a good written episode! There is a socially awkward, un lucky, but likable cop is a great character which is relatable for the audience. The cop character was conflicted with family and being a cop! The officer tried to help his brother, and gets plunged into an undercover story. A Jewish community, family undercover mob story, which is a fresh story for the series. A Miami Vice style deep cover story. Stone, and Keller mixed well into the story. Keller added humors while Stone adds narration with drive to Underground. Underground is a good story, which ties up all side stories into an entreating conclusion. A reinvented cop story.

A very good episode of this otherwise run-of-the-mill police show.

Lots of action and suspense make this a particularly good episode of "The Streets of San Francisco". Lt. Stone (actor Karl Malden) partners with a rookie cop to take down a bookmaking operation, and get the man at the top.

Is Lt. Keller (actor Michael Douglas) totally in the dark, or does he know what is really going on?

Good acting on all parts. Officer Danny Segal (actor Robert Drivas) is a bit too klutzy, but that's necessary for the set up of his character.

Nice appearance by actor David White as racketeer/gambler "Frank Garson". White is easily recognized as "Larry Tate" from the TV show "Bewitched". Also coming in strong is actor Jason Evers, as the character "Ben Rush"

Was actor Robert Drivas being positioned for a future role in The Streets of San Francisco? Was he being considered as a replacement for Michael Douglas, who was already in contract disputes and planning to leave the series?

A few blemishes keep me from rating this 10 stars:

1. Officer Danny Segal is wearing more makeup than Tammy Faye Baker.

2. What happened to "Evie", a blast from the past girlfriend of Police Officer Segal? Played by the stunningly beautiful actress Claudia Jennings (read about her tragic real-life story in the bio), there is no finality regarding her character. The same with girlfriend "Donna Sinclair" (actress Leslie Charleson)... she is in and out of the story.

A Different Perspective

The reviewer FloridaFeld refers to Streets of San Francisco as a "run-of-the mill police show". The facts belie that characterization. Streets of San Francisco was nominated three times (out of five seasons) for the Emmy Award for Best Dramatic Series. The lead actors, Karl Malden and Michael Douglas, were also nominated for acting Emmys for four of the five years that the series was on the air. In five seasons the program received 16 Emmy nominations (at a time when there were a limited number of categories). The series may suffer today in comparison to cable series such as The Wire (of course it does), but in the early 1970s Streets of San Francisco was a quality network continuing series.
