- While the crew is experiencing some much needed down time, Worf and his son go on an Old West excursion in the holodeck, where they meet several versions of Data serving as the bad guy after an experiment in Engineering goes wrong.
- When a supply ship is a day late, the Enterprise crew has an unexpected day to kill in leisure. Geordi and Data get permission to do an experiment, taking the main computer off line a few hours and Data's circuit running various systems, but a small physical burn-out in Data causes a series of malfunctions in him, such as his vocabulary and voice aberrations, but also various glitches in the many functions of the ship's computer, such as keeping track of recordings of say Picard's flute music or the text of a play Crusher and Riker are in. It's worst of all for Worf, who was ordered by Picard to indulge in some purposeless leisure, and chose to join his son Alexander on the holodeck as sheriff and deputy, with period adept Troi as mysterious stranger, in Deadwood, a Wild West evocation, in which two Data-like villains appear, also father and son, with daunting android abilities and no regular computer-restraint..—KGF Vissers
- While waiting to rendezvous with another ship, the crew of the Enterprise have some free time to pursue their pastimes. Worf and son Alexander spend time on the holodeck where Alexander has written a program that takes them to the old west. Even Counselor Troi joins them. Meanwhile, Geordi and Data experiment with the ship's computer to determine if Data could act act as a backup if needed. After a power surge all of the ship's systems seem to have been corrupted - including the holodeck where Data now takes the role of all the holographic bad guys including the local gunslinger. It all proves to be a potentially deadly situation when the players realize the holodeck's safeguards have been turned off.—garykmcd
- When a supply ship is 48 hours late, the Enterprise crew has an unexpected time period to kill in leisure.
Geordi and Data get permission to do an experiment, taking the main computer offline for a few hours and Data's circuit running various systems. The plan being to use Data as a backup computer for the ship, in case the main systems fail during an emergency. A small physical burn-out in Data causes a series of malfunctions in him, such as his vocabulary and voice aberrations. Also, this causes various glitches in the many functions of the ship's computer, such as keeping track of recordings of Picard's flute music, or the text of a play Crusher and Riker are in. All of them get files from Data's personal library, but not their own.
It's worst of all for Worf, who was ordered by Picard to indulge in some purposeless leisure and chose to join his son Alexander on the Holodeck as sheriff and deputy, with period adept Troi as mysterious stranger, in Deadwood, a 19th century Wild West evocation.
Eli Hollander (John Pyper-Ferguson) is an outlaw in the Holodeck program. Eli has killed 23 men and is known as the "Butcher of Bozeman" and has a reward on his head. Worf and Alexander are on his trail and are to apprehend him. Alex wants to make it difficult and increases the resistance level to 4 and resets the program. In the new iteration, Eli puts up a much harder fight to resist arrest by Worf and pulls a revolver on Worf. Eli is about to defeat Worf, when Deanna intervenes and saves them both. Eli is arrested by Worf. Eli says that his father will come to save him.
Alex is abducted by Frank (Brent Spiner), who claims to be Eli's father. Alex tries to freeze the Holodeck program but can't. Frank is a Data lookalike. Frank confronts Worf and demands the release of Eli. Worf realizes that this is not Data and that he can't exit the program. Worf is shot, but the bullet grazes his shoulder. Worf rushes back to the holding cell, where Deanna is keeping an eye on Eli, and they both realize that Eli has also been replaced by a Data lookalike in the program. Deanna speculates that if they take the program to its end conclusion, it will automatically terminate. Deanna realizes that Eli just doesn't look like Data, he also has Data's abilities.
Meanwhile Data & Geordi figure out that during the experiment, Data's interface programming overwrote sub routine C-47 of the computer mainframe, which impacts noncritical sub functions of the ship like library, entertainment systems etc. Data & Geordi can fix the problem in 2 hours. Meanwhile Data's own memory has traces of the 19th century mid-west accent that is currently playing on the Holodeck.
Frank makes a deal with Worf to exchange Eli for Alex. Deanna says Frank will break his word and tells Worf to plan for how to deal with an adversary with the speed and accuracy of an android. At the appointed hour, Worf heads out with Eli for the exchange. Worf rigs a force field using old telegraph equipment and thus is able to withstand the onslaught of bullets fired at him by Frank and his associates during the confrontation. Worf disarms Frank with his own accurate shooting. Worf is able to rescue Alex and tells Frank to withdraw and never enter the town again. The program ends automatically. Data and the ship are restored to normal operations. Worf enjoyed the bonding experience with Alexander. He promises to go back to the Holodeck with Alexander and spend more time with him.
