The only Deep Space Nine episode directed by Andrew Robinson, who plays Garak. Robinson would go on to direct Blood Fever (1997) and Unforgettable (1998).
Quark states "War, what is it good for? If you ask me, absolutely nothin'!" a paraphrase of a lyric from the 1969 song "War" by Edwin Starr.
This episode was a Star Trek twist on the play Cyrano de Bergerac.
When Grilka first meets Quark, he holds up his drink tray for protection and she goes for her knife. This mimics their first meeting in The House of Quark (1994), although far more playfully.
Phil Morris, who played the Klingon Thopok, appeared on the original Star Trek (1966) series almost exactly thirty years before, in Miri (1966) as "Boy in Army Helmet" in his first ever acting appearance at age 10. He was subsequently seen as Cadet Foster in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), as Remata'Klan in Rocks and Shoals (1997), and as John Kelly in One Small Step (1999). According to the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, Morris auditioned for the role of Benjamin Sisko but was turned down because he was too young.
