Funny!
g-bodyl12 August 2013
This episode of South Park, "Volcano" is pretty darn funny. It features some outrageous one-liners including the famous "Cartoons kick ass." This episode, the third one in Season 1, lampoons the two Volcano films which came out in 1997 and Patrick Duffy. The animation is starting to round into form as compared to the first episode.

This episode is about Uncle Ned taking the kids for a hunting trip in the mountains but they don't realize a volcano is on the verge of erupting.

Overall, this is a pretty funny episode. I liked now Ned tries to convince the guys that hunting is never fun sober and how he shoots every animal in sight. Also, I wish I have seen more of the Scuzzlebutt. I rate this episode 9/10.

The boys go hunting with Jimbo and Ned
Tweekums19 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode sees the boys going hunting with Stan's uncle Jimbo and his Vietnam War buddy Ned. The two adults quickly dispatch a bear and a deer; demonstrating how one must shout 'It's coming right for us!' before killing the placid creatures to get around 'pansy Democrat' animal protection laws. Next it is Stan's turn to kill something but when he has a rabbit in his sights he can't bring himself to kill it; much to his uncle's disgust. Kenny has no such problem and soon Jimbo is favouring Kenny over his nephew. Over dinner Cartman tries telling scary stories a about Skuzzlubutt; a strange creature that lives on the mountain; none of the others are frightened though so the next day he dons a disguise to scare them but instead finds himself being hunted! If that wasn't enough the mountain they are out hunting on is actually a volcano and it is about to erupt threatening not only the boys but the entire town of South Park.

There are plenty of laughs to be had here; most coming from trigger-happy hunters Jimbo and Ned; I couldn't help laughing as they deployed ridiculous firepower against a variety of defenceless creatures and gave the boys booze and cigarettes. Kenny's behaviour was also funnier than usual; we might not understand what he is saying but is clear from Jimbo's reaction that is was usually something quite disgusting! The eruption of the volcano provided some laughs too; it introduced us to the town geologist; Stan's father Randy Marsh and gave the Mayor more opportunities to look stupid as she repeatedly tried to do retakes when on live TV! Over all I don't think this is one of the best early episodes but it is still a lot of fun and well worth watching.

Volcano (#1.3)

Warning: Spoilers
We get to know more characters in this episode. We get to meet the geologist Randy. He doesn't do many memorable things in this episode but now we know that he will become one of the most popular and used characters.

Besides this we have Jumbo and Ned, the guys who love to hunt. Very special characters. Especially veteran Ned. They brought lots of laughs including the ridiculous love for hunting they have which for them is just blowing up innocently looking animals while yelling "it's coming right for us!".

Mayor posing for television in the dangerous time is once again bringing the laughter just as the fact that it was Denver that ended up being screwed by the volcano.

Scuzzlebutt is also showing us the extreme creativity of the show where it portrays things in a very outstanding way. As well as his unexpected and sad ending/

"It's Coming Right For Us!"
TWGProductions14 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Volcano" the Third (or Second?) episode of Season One continues to show gradual improvements to animation and dialogue as everything is starting to fall into place. This episode centers on one plot line regarding the volcano with sub-plots regarding Stan and Kenny with Stan's Uncle Jimbo.

A brief summary of this episode: The boys go camping on the outskirts of South Park. Their hunting trip brings up problems for Stan as Kenny outshines Stan in methods of killing animals and drinking. Stan becomes jealous and wants to prove himself. Meanwhile, the town of South Park has a looming volcano threat that would destroy the town along with the boys as well as Jimbo and Ned. Randy saves the town through a canyon that diverts the lava to Denver and Skuzzle-butt rescues the boys as well as Jimbo and Ned.

This episode is really quite a simple one and just is there to continue introducing ourselves to the townspeople and learning more about the boys. Compared to "Weight Gain 4000" and "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" this episode felt a little flat to me, but still was a great episode. I enjoyed the one-liners and Cartman's Vietnam dialogue. Overall, I would give this episode a 7.5 (Rounding to 8 for scale). This is another good episode for anyone who wants to re-watch South Park or those who want to delve into South Park for the first time.

Not as good as first two episodes but still pretty good

Volcano is an alright episode of South Park.I liked it, it was pretty funny, but I preferred the previous episodes.Actually, there are very very few episodes of South Park that I did not really like. This episode has the boys going hunting with Stan's uncle Jimbo and his army buddy Ned.Since there are a lot of laws against hunting Jimbo states that the animal is "coming right for us" before shooting it.Stan, however cannot shoot animals and Jimbo calls him a pansy. He takes a shine to Kenny who enjoys hunting and Stan is jealous.Meanwhile, a volcano is about to erupt where the boys are, and the townspeople must save them.A funny thing is, this episode marks the debut of Randy who is Stan's dad, however this is not mentioned in the show. There are some very funny parts in this episode but I preferred the first two episodes just by a little bit. They were more entertaining in my opinion.

Dirty little bastards

Warning: Spoilers
In Weight Gain 4000 we first saw the character Jimbo, and we saw him selling a gun to Mr. Garrison. In this episode, Volcano, Jimbo and his old war buddy Ned are properly introduced so this means there will be guns, there will be beers and smokes... it's time of hunting. In Volcano we have two plots: on one hand we have a hilariously over the top hunting show with Jimbo and Ned showing Cartman, Kenny, Stan and Kyle the tricks that thanks to the democrats they have to do now for hunting and some other stuff. It's simply f****** hilarious, I mean obviously hunting is not funny (to all of those that hunt for sport, just for fun: f*** you!) but boy, here in this episode you will have to just laugh hard when Jimbo and company (Stan is, unlike Kenny, not really into hunting) shoot em' up (boy, poor deer!)! And even more hard when they go fishing! And on the other hand we have a volcano threatening to erupt really soon. There are simple and funny jokes about how dumb the mayor is and the very first appearance of the now truly legendary Randy Marsh.

It's a terrific episode and while I just loved the stuff with Jimbo offering beer and smokes to the kids ("after all hunting sober is like fishing sober") I loved more the last words of the kids: "dude, I don't understand hunting at all", "yeah, it's stupid, let's go watch cartoons", "Yeah, cartoons kick ass". Oh and the duck and cover stuff, simply brilliant!

Something from the fireside chat with Matt and Trey: between continuing naming each and every episode their favourite one and changing their dog there's a pretty funny confirmation by Matt that may end with some of your doubts: "these are all works of fiction. There's no such thing as aliens, there's no such thing as Scuzzlebutt and there's no such thing as Patrick Duffy". They are of course wrong since Scuzzletbutt is a hero, well was a hero!

His left arm was made of celery and his leg was Patrick Duffy and he weaved wicker baskets
Nolamoviedude1 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Stan's uncle Jimbo takes the boys out to the woods to teach them how to hunt. He tells them that they can shoot anything they want as long as they say "It's coming right for us! " because the Democrats won't let them hunt when they want. Cartman replies " I hate Democrats" He shoots a bear then shoots a deer with a bazooka and then it's turn for Stan to shoot a rabbit but he can't shoot the bunny.

The town soon gets warning that a volcano is set to blow and ruin South Park but the campers are oblivious. Around the fire that night Cartman tells a scary story of Scuzzlebutt. He has celery in place of his left arm and one of his legs is TV's Patrick Duffy. He also weaves wicker baskets. The boys laugh at him saying he's terrible at scary stories. Soon a fireball kills Kenny and the boys are in the path of the lava until the real Scuzzlebutt saves them. The show ends with Chef singing his new hit " Hot Lava" and it turns out Kenny wasn't dead but dies when a gun accidentally discharges.

Other Character intros:

Ned: Jimbo's old war buddy who speaks through a voice box

Mayor: She's a clueless politician. Her secretary calls and says the geologist is on line 1. Her reply "Tell him the infection is fine and I will reschedule the appointment"

Randy: The geologist. We don't learn his name in this episode but he'll later be introduced as Stan's dad

Bad Will Hunting
Hitchcoc12 May 2022
This is another case of the guys experiencing things that are normal but exaggerated to the nth degree. Which is what this show is all about. We meet character whose world is "If it can move, shoot it." We also are introduced to a supernatural creature, originally of Cartman's creation. And instructions in case you have a volcanic eruption. I found the whole thing quite amazing.

Volcano Shmano

Rewatching the old episodes is fun but painful. There's a lot less one liners and the comedy is just slower, but it's nice. I'd give this a 7.3 which in terms of old south ain't too bad. The idea that there's a volcano in Colorado is pretty funny, Jimbo and Ned's introduction is great and their hunting gimmicks are pretty good at times. One thing I noticed in the earlier seasons is that the mayor was made out to be some sort of corrupt politician, she was just annoying and unlikeable I'm glad they changed her around.

Show Was Great and Funny In Early Days!
ShelbyTMItchell21 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Really a great show as it was in it's hey day. And the show that put Comedy Central on the map. It shows the four boys that are going on a hunting trip. As Stan can't bring himself to shoot.

As Kenny bonds with the two men, one of them is Stan's uncle. As they are going to a hunting trip and drink beer with the two men, that are also Vietnam vets.

But also they get more in the process like they have a huge volcano. And that they have the leg of an animal that looks like Patrick Duffy.

The show was really funny in it's hey day. Even though now it really is getting pretty old. But back then they were really funny!

Rewatch (Thursday 2nd March)

"What the heck is this?"

Woohoo! This episode (Volcano (S1 EP3 (August 20th 1997))) marks the first appearence of Randy Marsh which is absolutley fantastic! I liked him in this episode (Volcano (S1 EP3 (August 20th 1997))) and I'm pretty excited to see him more and for him to eventually become one of the main characters. Anyway the episode (Volcano (S1 EP3 (August 20th 1997))) doesn't revolve around Randy Marsh, he's barely even a character in it. The episode (Volcano (SQ EP3 (August 20th 1997) revolves around Cartman, Kenny, Kyle and Stan going on a camping trip with Stan's uncle Jim and his war buddy Ned.

Scuzzlebutt for the win!
ggroover9726 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's weird how "Volcano" is listed as the second episode of "South Park" on HBO Max but also listed as the third episode on IMDB. Regardless, "Volcano" is a slight improvement over the first episode.

"Volcano" marks the first appearances of Stan's Uncle Jimbo and his Vietnam War buddy Ned. Needless to say, these two make the episode. Jimbo's method of getting around liberal hunting laws is hysterical ("It's coming right for us!") and hearing Ned sing Kumbaya is another highlight.

Scuzzlebutt might be the most random thing ever put into a "South Park" episode. Celery for an arm? Patrick Duffy as a leg? It's so incredibly random and odd you can't help but appreciate it.

I also loved the volcano safety video shown to the townspeople. It's an obvious parody of those "duck and cover" safety films from the 1950s but taken to another extreme. Instead of nuclear weapons, all you need to do to avoid hot lava is to hide beneath a blanket. Genius!

Overall, "Volcano" is an alright early "South Park" episode. It adds more to the show canon while also providing several laughs sprinkled within.

Hunting is stupid.
axlrhodes14 December 2023
The boys go hunting. Cartman has flashbacks of being in 'nam. Ned Gerblanski 'sings' kumbaya by the campfire. Meanwhile, South Park is threatened by the catastrophe of a volcanic eruption. Chef sings 'Hot Lava'. The boys find out that hunting is stupid because they can only shoot certain animals. And they prefer cartoons. "Cartoons kick ass", says Eric Cartman. Well South Park certainly does.

It's an early episode but the tone and style of this show was strong from the very beginning. It's also wacky, with details like a giant Scuttlebutt monster that has Patrick Duffy as one of its legs. Bravo, Matt and Trey.

Bland by south park standards

Warning: Spoilers
This episode always feels out of place. Likely because Uncle jimbo and Ned were mostly phased out in later seasons. The episode was fine, just nothing particularly memorable.
