Simpsons deal with India
suchenwi28 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit that The Simpsons have been a blind spot for me in the last twenty years - of course I noticed their reflection in the news, but hardly ever watched an episode of theirs on TV (well, I hardly ever watch TV at all, except when hospitalized :). In preparation for this year's Xmas season, I presented myself with their Season 1.. and liked it so much that I bought 2..5, 8, 11 as well, and am now going through them with much enjoyment.

This episode amazed me so much that I just have to comment on it. Apu, the Indian manager of Springfield Kwik-E-Mart, has been around since Season 1, but here he is starring for the first time (and India with him). Appropriately we get to see his song & dance number, as typical with Bollywood movies, as well as clips from a mock Indian film (with more song & dance), and an adventurous voyage to India as well. Hilarious, as befits a comedy, but also sensible about the serious reality behind the topics (take Apu's and Homer's brief discussion of Karma, for instance).

As I love Indian movies, I enjoyed this episode so very much. The only thing I missed were silly police inspectors driving around in khaki-colored jeeps..

The searing kiss of hot lead

Homer goes undercover to expose bad customer hygiene standards at the Quick E Mart.

This is a strong character episode with plenty of memorable humour.

It is good to see Apu being the main focus for a full episode as he has always been a funny character in those brief moments at the Quick E Mart. All his scenes are good, particularly when it involves Homer and their adventure together. I love the concept of the head office being a temple in India.

James Woods' guest appearance is one of the most memorable of The Simpsons as he sounds like he's putting a great effort into a hilarious self-parody. There are also several great movie tributes and references.

Expiration Date--Not

Homer ends up in the hospital after eating rancid meat from the Quick-E-Mart. When he gets sick again, Apu is fired. He comes to the Simpsons' house and moves in and serves them, though the cultures clash a bit. It's a long episode that takes time to get where it's going but no bad.

Homer and Apu

Warning: Spoilers
Another classic episode the best bits are definitely the ridiculous hat and how Homer despite knowing the rancidity of the sausage still goes and buys a hotdog immediately, Kent's line "Mr Simpson?" was brilliant. But better still than this was the you can ask me three questions CEO of the Kwik-E-Mart. That was brilliant. Homer wasting them and Apu's apology-attempted murder was hilarious.

On the road with Homer and Apu

Warning: Spoilers
Here Homer accompanies Apu to the headquarters of Kwik-E-Mart in India, yes believe it or not, India, and the visit doesn't go down well with Homer messing things up. Anyway, this episode, Homer and Apu, is from season five, and this is when The Simpsons was at its peak, and it reminded me of the Seinfeld episode that was set in India, so maybe Homer and Apu inspired that episode maybe.

Anyway, I'm enjoying reflecting on The Simpsons, especially the first 10 seasons which in my humble opinion represents the golden era for sure, although some episodes post-season 10 are worthy of attention init.
