Adequate, but far too short to do justice to the story.

Maybe not the best "Sherlock Holmes" story, this one: young girls are being found murdered with a thistle being left by their bodies. A bamboozled Scotland Yard seeks the assistance of "Holmes" (Ronald Howard) and "Dr. Watson" (H. Marion Crawford) to help flailing "Insp. Lestrade" (Archie Duncan) solve the mystery. I suppose my problems with this are the pretty wooden Howard and the shortness of the film not really allowing for any sense of suspense to build - indeed we know from the outset how the murders are being committed, and when the denouement arrives, it's all just a bit too sudden. The production - early British television was certainly technically competent - is just a bit too stage bound for me, and the (probably censorially necessary) efforts taken by director Steve Previn to photograph the more macabre scenes, or, indeed, to avoid photographing them, robs the production of any menace at all. Would have been great on the telly in 1955, no doubt, but is definitely no Rathbone/Bruce...

Jack the Thistle

Warning: Spoilers
This is just another Jack the Ripper rip off. It involves a man who talks to women and then strangles them. He leaves three thistles on the bodies which means he is probably Scottish. He is doing this as he spells out the word "Phoenix" using the locations of his crimes. LeStrade becomes the foil here, having to see Holmes in order to satisfy his superintendent. All of it ends up in a darkened, foggy park where the principles sneak around through the fog, acting like incompetent idiots. They set up a decoy and then stand a hundred yards away, waiting for her to signal them with a telegraph key. it is about as ludicrous as you can get. It makes you wonder how they kept from laughing through the script. Don't bother with this one.

The Case of the Thistle Killer

A nod to Jack the Ripper. A number of young women are murdered on consecutive nights.

Scotland Yard is stumped and the chief superintendent wants Sherlock Holmes on the case.

Holmes sees a pattern based on the location of the dead bodies and figures just where the next murder might take place.

This was a pretty pedestrian effort. The mystery about the murderer was spoiled as the opening scenes informs the viewer that the murderer is disguised as a policeman.

The spelling out of PHOENIX was just a bit of nonsense.

Also it is now after all this time the superintendent enquires to Lestrade about this fellow called Holmes.
