Nora Dunn and scheduled musical guest Sinéad O'Connor boycotted this episode in protest of host Andrew Dice Clay's jokes about women. Julee Cruise was quickly hired to replace O'Connor. Dunn was fired at the end of the season.
David Spade makes his first appearance on the show, impersonating Michael J. Fox during a segment on Weekend Update. He was supposed to get a credit in the opening titles, but did not, and according to Spade, many viewers mistook him for Dana Carvey. This was his second episode.
