"Presenting the Three Degrees" opens with Rollo and Lamont boasting about becoming the new managers of Philadelphia girl group The Three Degrees (Valerie Holiday, Fayette Pinkney, Sheila Ferguson), a successful trio dating back to 1963. Fred happily welcomes three beautiful singers into his home, all grateful enough to cook breakfast and cover his face with kisses. He and pool hall buddies Bubba, Skillet, and Leroy attend the girls' talent competition at the Safari Club, certain to make the big time in Las Vegas. Fred's entourage mercilessly heckles the on stage talent until management gives them all the boot, including the girls (Lamont ends up with a bloody nose). The girls enjoy a happy ending though, returning to Philly for a three week engagement. In real life, they were just on the cusp of superstardom, with "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" topping the charts within months of this October 1973 broadcast. Fortunately, we do get to hear an acapella version of "I Didn't Know," officially recorded and released as the B-side of "When Will I See You Again," exactly one year after this performance. Slick Skillet and Lucky Leroy (third of five) would be back for two more episodes, always as a team.
