Flambeau and his daughter go to check out the card's manufacturer, it's named, 'Cartes Descartes, CIE' (Eng; 'Descartes Card, Co'), is a bit of a joke; first, it's a reference of mathematics/philosopher, René Descartes, who did much work in probability, statistics, and also is a slight pun on the French name, 'Decartes', and the word 'cartes' being so similar.
