Good Mystery, Needs More Femal Presence
aramis-112-80488030 August 2022
What happened to a fortune stolen from an American air base 8 years ago? A lot of people want to know. Once again, Simon seems pretty gullible.

Unfortunately this episode lacks the presence of a pretty female a la Justine Lord, Wanda Ventham or Annette Andre, who does good "puzzled." Indeed, the luscious Andre acts puzzled when she shouldn't be.

Simon teams up with a female mystery novelist, but she needs to be more pixillated. Too bad they didn't or couldn't bring back Nannette Newman (Mrs. Bryan Forbes) from the "miracle tea" episode. This woman has too much on the ball to be a writer.

A puzzling mystery and some good filming on a railroad.

The Contract

Warning: Spoilers
Directed by Roger Moore. The Saint is paid a visit by a man called Ardossi who warns him that someone is after the Saint. As Ardossi is played by John Bennett, you immediately smell a rat.

A man called Farnberg attempts to run over Simon Templar but someone called Dunstan comes in time to save him.

Farnberg was an American airman involved in a robbery at his air base some years ago, Dunstan is another American who happened to be a security guard.

I think here even the Saint smells a giant rat. The stolen loot was never found.

The key is novelist Eileen Ballinger, her husband was also involved in the robbery and hit the proceeds. Eileen seems to know nothing but Farnberg is convinced that she knows more than she lets on.

It's another routine episode populated by several American accents. Simon Templar seems to get wrongfooted in this one until he decides that Inspector Teal could be of help.

One man's vendetta against the Saint
Leofwine_draca6 June 2023
THE CONTRACT is a slightly more lively episode of the show than its predecessor, although not without problems. As usual it seems to have been written in a hurry with a good premise but lack of compelling detail to fill in the gaps. This time around, Templar himself is the subject of a vendetta by a vengeful American airman who deliberately targets him. He teams up with this quite dull female mystery novelist to bring the guy to book and the story follows from there. This one benefits from a few familiar faces popping up in the cast, from an amusingly brief turn by John Bennett as a heavy to the Brig himself, Nicholas Courtney, as a visiting policeman.
