- Tod and Buz have been working on the New Mexico ranch of Frank Ivy for a month. It isn't until Frank asks Buz to accompany him and another ranch hand, Roman, on a job that Buz finds out what kind of man Frank truly is. The job is to pick up a pregnant native American woman from the primitive hut where she lives alone, she who is soon to give birth. The woman obviously does not want to go with Frank, who manhandles her like a caveman would a cavewoman. Right then and there, Buz decides Frank is not the type of man for who he wants to work, and quits on the spot - a move he knows Tod will support - but not before a physical altercation with Frank and Roman, who is as thuggish as his boss. Tod and Buz will learn the woman is Kawna, and is the wife of Frank's now deceased son, Tom Ivy, the unborn baby Frank's soon-to-be grandchild. Despite not knowing she was pregnant at the time, Frank forced Tom and Kawna to get married, at least against Kawna's wishes, she who hated Tom as he raped her. Frank does not care what ultimately happens to Kawna, but he wants the child as his only living progeny. In turn, Kawna does not want the baby in Frank's hands. With a risk to their own lives, Tod and Buz try to help Kawna in any way they can for both her and the unborn baby's protection, even if she wants nothing more than to get away from Frank, her and the baby's lives about which she does not care. She had long wanted a sign from God, which she might get to provide them collectively with what they need to do for her and the baby's salvation, that is if Frank and Roman don't get to them all first.—Huggo
