- In their jobs working for Jordan Neon Signs based in Savannah, Georgia, Tod and Linc deliver a sign to Jensen Denker for his store in the nearby small rural town of Clausen, Georgia; the sign will be the only permanent night lights in the town. Before they can erect it, Simon Devereaux, a local young farmer just returned to the area five weeks ago after serving two years in the Army, purposely vandalizes it. This act follows a string of other such reckless behavior since his return, which was not like him prior to his Army stint, although he always had a sense of adventure and wanderlust. While Denker refuses to press charges as he and the other townsfolk have always liked and admired Simon, Tod and Linc stay the 24 hours or so required to repair and erect the sign, which most of the townsfolk believe Simon will just vandalize again. Simon's behavior seems to be related to the fact that his younger sister Ollie Devereaux is planning to move to Savannah, which is unusual; most people born in the town stay there. But everyone gets a clearer picture of why Simon is behaving the way he is with the arrival in town, at Simon's request, of a young woman named Diana.—Huggo
