- Micah loses re-election as Marshal due to voter apathy. Worse, it transpires the new Marshal took part in a deadly armed robbery and is protecting his partner in crime. He deputizes the latter to goad Micah, a witness, into a shootout.
- Lucas and Mark return to North Fork after a three week absence only to learn that in their absence, Micah was voted out as town Marshal and a newcomer, Ben Judson, is now in charge. It seems that several locals were away and many simply didn't bother to vote assuming Micah would win in a landslide. Lucas thinks the fix is in when Judson declares that a wanted outlaw, Bob Barrett, is a free man and can come and go as he pleases. Judson and Barrett realize that to get away with their scheme, they'll have to get rid of the only witness to Barrett's crimes - Micah Torrance.—garykmcd
- Lucas and Mark return from a vaction to find out that Micah was defeated in the election for town marshal. They meet the new marshal who asks Lucas for his rifle because the new marshal in enforcing a no gun ordinance. Later a man (Bob Barrett) wanted in North Fork arrives in town and visits the marshal's office. Lucas and Micah go over to confront Barrett and encourage the new marshal to arrest him and hold him for trial for robbing a stage coach and killing the driver and shotgun rider. The new marshal conducts a preliminary investigation to determine if there is a justified reason to arrest the man and after hearing evidence from Micah, who was riding the stage coach at the time of the robbery, makes a decision that there's no basis for arresting Barrett. After Lucas and Micah leave the office to go to the telegraph office to wire the regional judge, the audience finds out that the new marshal and Barrett were in together on the stage robbery. They decide to goad Micah into a gun fight in order to kill him and eliminate the only witness against them. The new marshal goes so far as to deputize Barrett to rile Micah. Once Micah confronts Barrett about wearing the deputy badge, Barrett calls Micah out for a show down. Micah accepts over Lucas' objections. When they face each other Micah is able to wound Barrett and then Barrett calls out for the new marshal to shoot Micah saying that if he's going down he's taking him with him. The marshal starts to draw and Lucas shoots the gun out of his hand. Everyone now knows the new marshal and Barrett were involved together in the stage coach robbery and Micah is reinstated as North Fork town marshal.
