[first lines]
Lucas McCain : There's hot coffee on the stove, folks.
Mark McCain : Excuse me, Ma'am.
Lucas McCain : Supper will be ready in about an hour. Hope you all like beef stew.
Christopher Rolf : It's very kind of you to put up with us, Mister...
Lucas McCain : McCain, Lucas McCain. This is my boy Mark.
Christopher Rolf : My name's Ryan. Uh, this is Miss Miller I believe you said?
Tess Miller : Yes, Teresa Miller. I'd like to add my thanks. I hope we won't be too much trouble, Mister McCain.
Lucas McCain : It'll be a little crowded, but I'm sure we'll make out.
Vince Medford : Medford's my name. Vince Medford.
Lucas McCain : Hello, Mister Medford.
Vince Medford : Heh, drink?
Lucas McCain : No thanks.
Vince Medford : I sell this stuff. These samples sure come in mighty handy a day like this. I don't like to drink alone.
[to Rolfe]
Vince Medford : What about you? Where 're you going?
Christopher Rolf : The driver might need a little help.

Mark McCain : Where did you go to school, Mr. Rolfe?
Christopher Rolf : Well, as a matter of fact, at one time I was a teacher.
Mark McCain : Oh... Well, why did you quit?
Christopher Rolf : Well, there was a *useless* gunfight in my town. A bullet killed my wife. Guns were my hobby. I collected them. I also knew how to use them. I went after that man to bring him back to trial. He tried to gun me, I was faster. He said he was good, that I'd out-drawn one of the best. Well, word got around. Others came laughing to try the school teacher. They still come. And I'm trapped. He's right. I *am* a killer, but not by choice.

[last lines]
Mark McCain : Boy, wait 'til the kids at school hear that Christopher Rolfe spent the night at our house?
Lucas McCain : Oh, you gonna tell them?
Mark McCain : Sure I am.
Lucas McCain : 'Bout everything?
Lucas McCain : Well, maybe I'd better not tell them about e-everything.
[Lucas laughs]
