- A fugitive convinces Rowdy to bring him to the sheriff and hand over the reward to his wife. But the fugitive is murdered on the way to the sheriff, no wife can be found, and three friends of the fugitive are out to kill Rowdy.
- Alone on the trail, Rowdy is befriended by Sam Jefferson who has a $5000 "dead or alive" price on his head. Sam wants Rowdy to take him to the sheriff and give the reward to Sam's wife. Rowdy agrees, but just then an unknown person shoots Sam in the back and flees. Rowdy takes the body to town and waits for the reward to be wired. Meanwhile he is told that Sam was unmarried! And three outlaw friends of Sam are on the way to kill Rowdy after the funeral. Rowdy refuses the sheriff's offer of protection because he is demanding half of the $5000. Finally Rowdy's questioning pays off: he learns that Sam was secretly married to to the daughter of his boss, the town's Wells Fargo agent ( Louis Hayward), who disapproved of Sam, and so framed Sam for robbery, leading to Sam's flight and the wanted posters. Rowdy then deduces that the agent was the one who murdered Sam, but the three friends of Sam are gunning for Rowdy!—chipe
- While scouting, Rowdy's horse trips injuring Rowdy's head on a rock. Rowdy is dazed but a stranger, Sam Jefferson, passing by helps Rowdy rest over night. The next day he reveals to Rowdy he is a wanted man with a $5000 bounty on his head. While making coffee, Sam is shot in the back by a rifle at long distance. His last request to Rowdy is to turn him in and give the reward to his wife. Rowdy turns Sam's body in to Sheriff McKay. John Tasker from Wells Fargo will give Rowdy the reward the next day if he receives the okay from the main office. Meanwhile, the word quickly spreads that Rowdy shot Sam in the back making him very unpopular. When he asks, everyone says Sam was not married. McKay warns Rowdy Sam's friends will be there the next day wanting revenge when he collects the reward. The Sheriff will help Rowdy - for half the reward. Rowdy is able to locate the gang's liaison man and find that Sam's wife is Tasker's daughter, Ruth. Ruth tells Rowdy the marriage was annulled by her father but she still loves him. When Rowdy tells her he did not shoot Sam, both realize who did. Rowdy returns the money to Tasker who tells the gang members Rowdy was the shooter forcing Rowdy to fight.—Anonymous
