Confidence man Elwood Gilroy ('Dick York'), while stranded at the drovers' camp, learns where the cattle ownership papers are and proceeds to sell the herd to a local banker at a bargain price. Favor is away on business at this time. Gilroy is a accompanied by exotic dancer-entertainer Crystal (
Barbara Eden), who is abandoned by him once the herd is sold. Meanwhile Rowdy and the drovers are thrown in jail after they create a ruckus over the sale of the herd. In two days there is to be a trial as to the rightful ownership of the herd. Crystal bails Rowdy out of jail so the two of them can follow Gilroy, who has been defrauding suckers as he flees - selling useless medical elixirs, salting supposed gold diggings, and getting a year's advance salary pretending to be famous marshal. They finally abduct him and force his return for the trial just in the nick of time.
