THE PROFESSIONALS – "Old Dog With New Tricks" – 1978

Episode three of the of the 1977 to 1983, UK, action-crime series, THE PROFESSIONALS. Gordon Jackson is in charge of CI-5, a group of men drawn from the SAS, Police and other law enforcement agencies. Their mandate is to stop acts of terrorism and threats against the UK.

The IRA hits an army armoury and makes off with several dozen rifles, handguns and a couple boxes of hand grenades. While unloading their haul, the IRA, are interrupted by another group of armed men. They relieve the IRA of the weapons and kill all six of them.

When news of the theft gets to CI-5, they jump into action. The bodies of the IRA types are soon found. Agents Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins are assigned to the case. They wonder who would have been dangerous enough to bump off the IRA lads.

The gang involved is, the heavy mob of crime boss, Johnny Shannon. Shannon has a brother doing some long time in one of H.M. prisons. Shannon intends to kidnap the UK Home Secretary and exchange him for his brother and free passage out of the country.

One of Shannon's mob though, stupidly, helps himself to a pistol and a grenade for a bit of personal revenge. The man, Philip Davis, is not all quite there in the head. He takes the weapons to a mental clinic where he takes a nurse, Pamela Stephenson, hostage. He wants to see the doctor, Basil Hoskins, who had treated him there.

CI-5 is summoned by the Police, when the grenade is spotted. Shaw puts a round into Davis' shoulder while Collins grabs the grenade from him. Davis is hauled off for a spot of questioning. The not to bright Davis soon fills CI-5 in on his boss, Shannon's kidnap plot.

CI-5 boss, Gordon Jackson has the Home Secretary change all his travel arrangements for the day. Jackson himself, with Collins along will make the rounds instead. Sure enough, the two CI-5 men are grabbed up by Shannon's bunch at one of the planned stops.

Shannon, thinking he has the real Home Secretary, makes a long list of demands for his brother, himself and his men. Jackson of course informs him of his error. Shannon is not at all happy with this news and decides he will kill Jackson and Collins. That is till Shaw shows up with a shotgun pressed to Shannon's brother's head. The brother, Anthony Morton, wishes to keep his head where it is and begs Shannon to surrender.

Shannon and his men file out of the building and drop their arms. All are quickly cuffed and taken away. This calls for a stiff drink and a cigarette.

A quick paced, and rather violent episode of a great UK series.

A young Phil Davies and Pamela Stephenson are the guest stars.

Davies plays disturbed Billy Turner who holds a nurse (Stephenson) hostage by placing a grenade down her top outside a hospital where he had psychiatric treatment. As Bodie rushes to save her, he manages to take her top off and exposes her bra. It really is Confessions of an Intelligence Officer.

That is not the main plot. Gangster Charley Turkel wants his brother Henry out of jail. Henry has been struggling to keep it together.

The audacious plan involves taking over a small police station that is due to receive a visit from the Home Secretary and then hold him hostage. Charley will then do a hostage exchange for his brother.

Cowley has an equally unconvincing plan to pretend to be the Home Secretary.

All I can say it was a good job that the bad guys had no plans to kidnap Denis Healey, I doubt anyone from CI5 had the eyebrows too fool anyone!

Warning: Spoilers
OLD DOG WITH NEW TRICKS was designed as the introductory opening episode of THE PROFESSIONALS, but actually went out as episode three. It ends up with a stock hostage situation which I found a little bit underwhelming as the best part of the episode is an earlier sub-plot involving guest star Phil Davies (looking incredibly young) as a grenade-wielding thief who gets into an exciting showdown with the boys. Pamela Stephenson, of NOT THE NINE O' CLOCK NEWS fame, also appears as his target.

Not the usual standard

Bodie, Doyle and Cowley get involved in a plot to spring the brother of a master criminal. Not before a disturbed young man holds a nurse hostage with a hand grenade down her bra!

The episode was, apparently, one of the first to be filmed in the series. There is a scene where Cowley is explaining to new recruits what CI5 is all about.

It is interesting to note that voice of the actor playing Charlie is dubbed by actor and voiceover supremo Gary Watson, who is not credited.

Not The Best EP

Series 1 of The Professionals was wildly inconsistent. It had memorable excellent episodes (Close Quarters, Female Factor, When The Heat Cools Off and, Private Madness...) mixed with low budget clunkers like Look After Annie and Where The Jungle Ends. Old Dogs is closer to the latter. Preposterous plot, little action and Martin Shaw & Lewis Collins yet to grasp their witty, conversational banter that was such a joy. If you're a newbie to The Professionals this is one to skip, along with the already mentioned above.. "Biiilllyyyyy" remains the most annoying moment of the entire show. You'll know what I mean once you've watched.
