Another classic prisoner moment with Alice's performance in the talent contest.
In the Talking Prisoner podcast, actress Lois Collinder revealed it was Grundy Head of Production Peter Pinne who suggested Alice Jenkins sing the talent contest, telling her that she could choose the song as long as he could obtain permission from the rights holder. Collinder asked Pinne if she could perform "Down South America Way" from the musical "It Happened in Tanja Blanca", which Pinne had co-written and in which Collinder had performed in earlier in her career. Pinne was delighted, as not only would his song be brought to a much wider audience, but he also would not have to secure the rights, as he already owned them.
Lois Collinder asked to perform Alice's song "cold", with the rest of the cast unaware of what was coming, to make the characters' reactions as genuine as possible. Elspeth Ballantyne, who played Meg Morris, and Ernie Bourne (Merv Pringle) can be seen crying with laughter in the scenes.
