Hollis Wilburn is an attractive, if somewhat ditzy, young woman who lives with her uncle John Wilburn. Hollis is due to inherit 15% of her uncle's business upon his demise. Two young men are romantically interested in her, Martin Potter and Alex Gaussner, but she can't quite decide which one she prefers. Both are also trying to get product franchises for Europe from her uncle, so she can't be sure if it's really her that they're interested in. She has access to her uncle's office safe because he asked her to retrieve documents from it due to his having a weak heart. Afterwards, Wilburn receives a call attempting to blackmail him over a Swiss bank book taken from his safe. He takes steps to find the blackmailer and accuses Hollis of giving the combination of the safe to someone else. After he's found dead in his home office, Hollis learns that he made out a holographic will leaving her everything. When Hollis is charged with murder, she turns to corporate lawyer Sherman Hatfield for help. While Perry Mason is recovering from an operation, he takes on the case with the help of Della Street and Paul Drake.
