Murderer Against Type
bkoganbing11 October 2012
Perry Mason's client in this episode of the series is young Wynn Pearce who is the son of Lurene Tuttle and stepson of Bruce Gordon, the latter whom he cordially hates. In fact you would hate him to if in fact a guy with a gun kidnapped you on the day of a company board meeting when a corporate power play was being engineered and your vote could decide the outcome.

Later on Bruce Gordon is found dead and Pearce is the suspect only William Hopper can't locate the alleged kidnapper and he could be crucial to the case.

There is a wonderful scene here where Raymond Burr turns a prosecution witness, a nosy neighbor played by Dorothy Adams to his witness. Can't give more away than that. Adams is best known on the big screen for playing Gene Tierney's lesbian maid in Laura. She's great here.

There was a big surprise for me in the ending because a certain premise on which we were led to believe triggered all the subsequent events did not happen. And the perpetrator is one that we would never have suspected because of that and because the roles that player usually is cast in. Good writing.

Worthy Episode

Yet another corporate takeover story where a couple of the participants are up to no good. It involves a careless marriage and a son who feels disenfranchised. He ends up accused of murdering his stepfather who controls the pursestrings through his wife. The key is a guy hired to kidnap the young guy and force him to miss an important meeting. A photographer and some central casting comes into play. By the way, where is Hamilton this season?

I'm Going To Central Casting

Warning: Spoilers
This one involves the step father whose trying to take over his new wife's family business from the son (Lester) and the business manager whose been running the company for years. It has all the appearances of the Step Father being ruthless beyond belief. Then, he is murdered.

There is a photographer who takes two important photos, one which gets stolen & is then lost. The other is a fake photo with Perry subbing for the step father at the same place. The important stockholders meeting is originally scheduled for 10 AM. Then Lester can't show up due to a dark haired man with a mustache trying to get him drunk & driving him out of town.

The stepfather suspects something is going on & so does the business manager but all seems OK, until the step father is murdered at Lesters place. Then everything goes awry. Mason has too resort to some court room high jinx & a trip to central casting to sort out this one.

The Central Point

Warning: Spoilers
This episode uses a device of misidentification twice. Once for the prosecution, and then turned against them for the defense. This is where things are real murky. See, if Sam Crane hired "The Man" to scare Lester into saying that Judson tried to have him killed, then WHY was "The Man" accepting a payoff from Judson? Remember the photograph? Let's just say that he was the same guy. It would take brass ones to pull off working one side against the other, wouldn't it? Now, Paul Drake gets an actor from central Casting to impersonate "The Man". Now, I dug out my own copy of this episode, and I'll swear it IS the same man. The same guy playing the same parts in three different ways.

Well, why not? I'm gonna say this: that is EXACTLY what the writers directors, and producers did, just to find out if anyone would notice. I'm betting that I'm not the only one, either. I'll bet a lot of watchers have figured this out. What a terrific way of subtly pointing out the value of Casting Departments, S.A.G., and the incomparably fine actors and actresses that were available for this fine series and other popular shows through the years. I've mentioned it before, and I know I will again. Thanks for the great acting; to all those unsung Stars of Hollywood.

Lots of tricks but lacking treats in this episode
kfo949425 June 2012
When I read that the episode contain another plot concerning stockholder's meeting that could change the ownership of a company, I was less than thrilled. In fact just a few shows past- we dealt with the same issue and the nearly the same plot. But I will say that this episode had a few more twist that kept the show interesting.

Lester Martin is trying to keep his step-father, Judson Bailey, from gaining control of the family company. A company stockholder's meeting had been set up for ten o'clock and Lester had to be present in order to secure the outcome of the meeting. However, before he can get ready a rough looking guy breaks into his home gets him intoxicated and then drives him to the edge of town. He misses the meeting but still has another chance later on in the evening.. Lester believes that the man was hired by his step-father to keep him away from the meeting.

Sam Crane (a co-worker and friend of Lester) finds out that Judson is going to be at a local bar. He calls Lois Rogers (girlfriend of Lester and photographer) to see if she would go to the bar and take picture of anyone Judson is meeting that matching the description of the man who kidnapped Lester.

When Judson discovers that pictures had been taken, he becomes upset and goes over to have-it-out with his step-son. Before too long, Judson is dead and Lester is nowhere to be found. Lt Tragg is waiting with murder warrants in hand.

Perry will defend Lester in court and will have to use some slight-of-hand to make people believe they see things that are not really there. And we all know Perry will also use the same 'hand' during the courtroom testimony that will produce the true murderer.

This story has been told several times in the 'Perry Mason' series and will be used again. But the writers do there best in trying to making an enjoyable episode to watch.

Won't you come home Judson Bailey won't you come home

Warning: Spoilers
****SPOILERS**** Straight from hunger Perry Mason , Raymond Burr, episode having to do with the attempt to take over the controlling interest of a ship building company by the mobster looking Bruce Gordon as as ship building tycoon Judson Bailey. In fact Gordon played top Chicago's gangster, after his boss Big Al Capone was sent away to Alcatraz, Frank "Necktie" Nitte in the "Untouchable" TV series. Here we have Bailey's step son Lester Martin, Wayne Pearce, accused of offing or murdering him after Lester himself was kidnapped by what he thought was one of Bailey's goon. That in order to keep Lester from attending a stock holders meeting and proxy vote in who would gain control of the family ship building business. It's up to our hero Perry Mason to get things straightened out in Lester's favor. But the key to Lester Martin's defense is the mysterious "Man", Baynes Barrow, who not only kidnapped him but if found alive can clear up the mystery to who hired him and, if it wasn't Bailey, thus reveal Bailey's killer.

The Perry Mason episode just goes around in circles with Perry doing his best to uncover evidence that can prove his client Lester Martin Innocent. A big clue in all that is a photo at Coralie's Bar & Grill that was taken of the late Judson Bailey with the "Man" just before he was found murdered. Was it the "man" or someone else who murdered Judson Bailey and if it wasn't, thus exonerating Judson Bailey in Lester's kidnapping, who in fact hired the "Man" to kidnap Lester!

****SPOILERS**** As things soon turned out the "Man" was tracked down by Perry Mason's in house private investigator Paul Drake, William Hopper, in parts unknown and escorted into the courtroom at the Lester Martin murder trail. It was the very sight of the "Man" that had Judson Bailey's killer brakes down and confess that he in fact murdered Bailey for monetary not, in fact he really liked the guy, personal reasons. So ended the story of the "Man" who was photographed at Coralie's Bar & Grill with Judson Bailey who never saw him before in his entire life! Yet his very presence in the courtroom ended up exposing Bailey's murderer!
