Jennifer Wakely owns a beautiful racehorse, Tiger Lil, but runs into trouble after her father dies saving the animal from a barn fire. Her uncle and the executor for her father Howard's estate, Emmett Pearson, tells her there is little left for her to inherit. He even sells her beloved Tiger Lil to her former boyfriend Brad Shelby who is now married to a rich neighbor, Madelon Haines, owner of Shamrock stables. George Tabor, trainer at Shamrock stables, was fired by Shelby. Jennifer is devastated by it all and is comforted by her father's one-time secretary, Roberta Harper. Then she receives a call from Mrs. Shelby saying she can have the horse back. She goes to retrieve the horse at night but is surprised by Shelby. She reacts by striking at him with a spreader (large pitch fork) but didn't think she hurt him seriously. When Shelby is found dead however, it's Jennifer who is charged with murder and Perry Mason defends her.
